No SignalA Poem by Brett PritchardThe eyes are open, the mouth moves, but something is wrong....
With a listless gaze she greets us Her eyes lacking focus or depth My blood running cold as I recognize the smile so familiar Now warped by the ravages of inactivity and decay Does she know me? Her head looks busy As if living a million tragedies joys and jokes simultaneously Life unbound The filter of the mind shattered The words come without meaning yet the meaning is all too clear She trembles Like a leaf cast asunder in the breeze she trembles I’ve no idea how the world must appear through her eyes today I pray her daze grants her a delusion of happiness My prayers aren’t answered The episodes of fear and confusion are sporadic Her tears are heavy yet frantic They tear at my heart I bleed to think what they may be doing to hers During these moments I welcome the gloom when it descends Ignorance preferable to agony Through our own privately shed tears we steel ourselves for the worst…. Hope Against the odds hope emerges Signs of wit bites of humor The sparkle beginning to return gradually to her eyes The recognition ebbing back into her features The signal is tuning in Scrambled but clear it can thankfully still be heard I realize in my heart that the days ahead cannot be without struggle I shudder to comprehend that today may have seen the future Nevertheless I depart a less jaded man Hope has shone And her gaze is listless no more….
