A Poem by Brett Hernan

He has

a fondness

for putting

human beings

to waste

and destitution

whilst on

display,

to the delight

and amusement

of both himself

and for his merciless

venom spouting

nourished audience,

generally

enamoured

of his

every

cruelty.

Publicly

unloaded

upon

some

other

one

whom they

could only

secretly,

spitefully

envy

for having had

the privilege

of inhabiting

that magical

light box

in which

pictures move

and which

contained

a

swathe

of beautiful pleasures

and people

and

into which

They could not

see their lives

Ever seeming

to fit.

A life

which could

only ever

be glimpsed,

in blanket

wrapped,

lounge suite lunges,

with cold fingers,

into the broken

and empty,

no lucky code

containing,

Cheezoes

cheese-flavoured

cheese snacks

packet.

A strange

childhood fantasy

which must

seem, when

temporarily

temporally

cogniscently

self-aware

and in

that

mode of thinking

where,

‘We matter too!’

Shut down

into a

nightmare’s

ghost train

dead-end

broken

junction

box

abandoned

railway

station

flowing

with

spider webs.

Inside,

some

inexplicably

mysterious

and deeply

repellent

cloud

of shadow.

In both

his

own mind,

and

without

doubt,

constantly,

in those,

of

our

viewers.
