Choirs of Lawn Mowers

Choirs of Lawn Mowers

A Poem by Brett Hernan
"

First draft. Just another public holiday.

"
I refuse to celebrate
'Australia Day'
a day where so many hearts were broken
like skulls of living beings being cleft apart
their sound now lost like tears amongst
the sausages sizzling
loudly on a barbecue hotplate.

I refuse to celebrate
'Australia Day'
a day when so many stay inside
and hide in there all day for fear
that the melatonin level in their skins
is not matching the right
swatches.

I refuse to celebrate
'Australia Day'
until I can wear a T-shirt
with an upside down Aussie flag
printed boldly upon it,
bearing the standard,
'Sorry! I refuse to celebrate
an unprovoked invasion.'
