Chapter one:  The battle between future friends

The sky looked dim, and the clouds looked dark. This was a sign that a great evil had been unleashed in Roviera, the city in which we lived. There was fog all around us, covering most of the scenery like a thick, cold blanket. I looked up and instantly saw a small image, falling towards me. It seemed to be a man, or the figure of a man. As the man drew nearer and nearer, more of his physical appearance began to show. He had long, black hair, hanging over a velvet cape in which he wore behind his back and his eyes were crimson-red. His jacket was a dark shade of grey, and his pants seemed to join up with the shirt. He wore thick, black boots on his feet. He looked pale, at the moment and within his teeth, two, razor sharp fangs appeared in place of his canine teeth.

It came clear to me that this man was a member of the vampires, and he didn’t seem too happy about us werewolves crashing their reunion. As the vampire landed with a thud, just meters away from us, he instantly looked up at me and I could see blood dripping from his smile, as if he had just bitten someone. He then began to make his way towards us, ever so slowly, but I was much too strong to run away. Instead, I changed from this weak, human form, to my true form. Within moments, white, silver fur began to grow on my arms, legs and face and my entire body. My mouth was replaced with a snout, with razor sharp teeth inside. My eyes changed to a yellowy colour and in place of my human tail bone, a long, white tail formed. I now looked like a snow-white wolf, standing on my hind legs, ready to pounce. As the vampire got closer, my time to attack grew nearer, until…Swoosh!! I had jumped into the air and launched myself towards the vampire. Instantly, he formed his hands into fists and protected his face from the grip of my claws. A fight between Vampire and Wolf had soon broken out, and I was backed up by three other werewolves, one of which was my brother, Ezier, and his two other friends, Ryuki and Siren. Ezier had black fur, whilst Ryuki and Siren both had blonde fur. The man I had attacked was also backed up by three other vampires. One of which was my long life enemy, Ominous. He had purple, spikey hair that always seemed to stand up on end, even when wet. Our rivalry began when we were still in primary school. He always played mean pranks on me and got all the attention from the popular kids, but back then we still were considered humans and hadn’t a clue of our true forms.

The other two vampires were twins, both with short, brown hair. All four of the vampires had crimson-red, glowing eyes and long, vampire fangs in place of their canines. They were wearing black, leather jackets with velvet capes hanging from their backs. This was going to be a battle to remember. Ezier, my brother, was at the brink of striking one of the vampire twins, when he was beaten at the attempt by Ryuki.

Wolves were divided into ‘packs’. Each pack had an alpha or leader (usually the father or creator of the pack) and the heir to being the next alpha was the alpha’s oldest son or daughter. Each pack had their own special abilities that only their pack members could do, whether it is a physical ability or a spiritual ability. Ryuki belonged to a pack of wolves known as the hirophians; known to be the fastest werewolves of all. They have blonde fur and very small claws because they don’t specialise in any type of combat. Siren belongs to a very rare wolf pack, known as the Lucia pack; well known for their illuminating howl, which could hypnotize up to 10 targets at once, if done properly by a highly-advanced Lucia pack member, but not necessarily the alpha. They also have blonde fur but slightly bigger and sharper claws than the hirophians. My brother and I are part of the Syrophien pack; best known for our abilities to blend in with our surroundings at will and also shape-shift into inanimate objects. We have two abilities, which is different to other packs as others only seem to have one. My father, Junji, is the alpha of our pack and his brother, Fujo, is his right-hand man.

I was ready to pounce. At that thought, I leapt towards Ominous, with my claws drawn out like blades, ready to pierce through his shimmering skin. I took a swing at his head, with my right paw, but missed. Using his vampire strength, he drilled his fist into my snout and sent me flying back, leading me to fall flat onto my back side. “Ouch!!” I shouted, for I had sat on my tail. Ominous soon came after me, wanting to hit me for the second time, but as he got closer, my fur began to vanish. It had gone from silver to see-through and this transformation had occurred all over my body. I was now invisible to the naked eye, though being a vampire; I feared that he could see me. I quickly sprung to my feet and tackled the vampire. He threw punches at me but ninety nine per cent of the time, he missed my face. It was as if he truly couldn’t see me. He kicked me off, with a powerful kick, and sent me flying once more, into the air. This time, I landed straight into a building. Oh no, we weren’t fighting in Remora, we were still on Earth. The humans could’ve seen me. But wait, I’m invisible. Well, they could see the hole I had made when I crashed in, but when I stood up and looked around, they all looked straight past me. I looked back through the hole and Ominous’s face stared right at me. Did the humans around us know what was going on? Had they seen Ominous reveal his fangs, or were they only seeing this for the first time? Ominous came towards me and stopped, about two and a half meters away from me. He began speaking, “Sorry to break in like this, my car got out of control. I promise you it won’t happen again.” He had told the humans a lie to cover up our secret. After all, even though vampires and werewolves hate each other, we still try our best to keep our existence a secret to humans. I ran outside, only to see my brother hanging from the edge of a building. He was in his human form and he looked very weak, compared to what he was a moment ago. His hands began to slip, and within moments, he would fall 16ft from the building to the ground, if I didn’t act fast. I returned to my white-furred self and dropped to the ground on all fours. I ran towards the building as fast as I could. When I was within an arm’s reach from the building itself, I leapt upwards and gripped the walls with my razor-sharp claws. I began climbing up with my front paws whilst pushing upwards with my hind legs. I could see Ezier, hanging on to the edge for dear life. His last hand slipped and he fell backwards from the edge. Down, down and down he fell, til…Snatch!! I had caught him by the arm. I jumped to the side and off the building. I fell down and landed with a thud. I was ok, but more importantly, my brother was ok. Ryuki and Siren had gone after the vampire. There was no sign of them anywhere. I looked down at Ezier’s face, which was resting in my palms. He looked up at me and said, “Breticon, thanks for saving me.” “Ezier…” I replied, “I’d risk my life for my brother”.

Later on that evening, I didn’t hear any word of Ryuki and Siren’s where-a-bouts. They had been gone for a while now. Back at home, I had been welcomed by my best friend, Tarrynkora. He was a member of the Hyena pack; best known for their incredible strength. They have dark grey fur with green and black spots and silver highlights on the tips of their tails. It is said that they could bite through any bone structure and could also chomp through metal. The Hyenas’ alpha was a man named Bikugi. Tarrynkora and I often spent most of the day playing tricks on the other wolves, to prove which one of us was the king of pranks. He’d usually use the old ‘Banana peel on the floor‘ trick and often put whompie cushions under everyone’s chairs. He wasn’t as creative as I was. I would wait til everyone’s asleep and come out at night and pretend I was a vampire. I’d put on a black cape and fake vampire teeth, both of which I had borrowed from one of the humans’ novelty shops. Some of the wolves would wake up and scream, I would laugh, but most of the time I always got caught so now the other wolves know it’s me whenever I play that same trick.

Tomorrow, all the young wolves, aged thirteen to seventeen, were to begin or continue their year at Five Arrows Academy, a school for creatures such as; vampires, werewolves, elves, pixies and even ghosts, can go to in order to learn and master their true abilities. The headmaster, known as Meyio, is a wizard. He is one of the only two remaining wizards in the world. He founded the school twenty years ago and has been running it ever since, with the help of the Genko society. The Genko society is a group made up of the strongest creatures from each of the five, main creature species. The first Genko member, being the leader of the Genko himself, is Ketto, the alpha male of all the wolf packs combined. The second Genko member is the Sage of the elves and is mostly known as Marinkora. He is the leader of all the elf guilds combined and the strongest elf alive. The third Genko member is Kurenzo, leader of all the vampire clans combined, though people of his kind call him Lord Kurenzo or Count Dracula. The fourth Genko member is Pharaoh, leader of the phantom ghosts. Oddly enough, the fifth Genko member is unknown. The fifth Genko member was thought to have left the Genko society and is secretly running an evil group of creatures called the Silver moon, outside Roviera. Tarrynkora and I had earlier prepared for the long trip to the academy, for we had to go there on foot. As werewolves, we could turn into full wolves and make our journey there on all fours, using our tracking abilities to find Five Cross Academy and as well as our speed and endurance. We went to bed that night, with no report of Ryuki and Siren’s return, hoping by tomorrow they would’ve returned home.
