The Way Ahead

The Way Ahead

A Poem by Brent

Mo graveled road way, way ahead
Look ova to my left, a rock to lay my head

Ova yonder a cow bell rattles
Bloody footsteps in my wake hope they don’t tattle

I curse those barking that knows my ways
Look back to the rock sayin sorry caint stay

Listen! Can hear the sweet sound of water
Think of the Bible where He leads me; yes my Father

He says go, go, go for there angels await
So I run, run, run not knowin my fate

Close to the river there two white boys be
Lookin up among the trees quickly they see me

They wavin in earnest I dare not reply
But me stopping surely I will die

So with God in my heart and flight in feet
Those two white boys I go to meet

Say boy, they hot on yo trail
Got git in the water the dogs can’t smell

I tell them I caint swim worth a lick
You aint got no choice, life or death you pick

So with a hop in the waves I continue my dash
Down the river of woe the currents do splash

Struggling wif all my strength
Too much water to drink

Settlin on this, my last moment spent
A little prayer of grace my sins I repent

As soon as I let go and let God
My hand grabs hold to a rod

With all my strength way long gone
I'm pulled up on a beach and can hear a song

I wake up with a smell and sizzling in a pan
A gaze of grace to see Harriet Tubman
