A New Start

A New Start

A Poem by Hayden Chambers

Midnight. Staring at Orion

The night sky beyond the window

Elbows resting on the sill

Breath caught in the stillness

Thinking about recent changes

How far I've come

A new job and a new house

Both within two weeks

A new view

A new start

Stars shine brighter here

Shimmer with a fresh clarity

Boxes now unpacked, flattened

Piles of books in the corner

Waiting for the bookcase to be built

I'll get around to all these jobs eventually

Finding places for all of my things

Deciding where this should go

Making a space for that

This space now feels like my own

My much loved cactus

Flourishing in my new house

It has grown a new flower

Big, bright, bold, healthy

It showed no sign of new growth

Over the last year

In the old house

There's a metaphor in there somewhere
