Wake up

It's so easy to forget... so easy to fall asleep

Young and true, she sits with her friends
Sipping from an empty cup
A doll, a bear, and a stuffed horse
And it's all real
Her love for them
Their love for her
Even grandma says she loves her
As she smiles serenely, knowingly
offering the cookies

In the kitchen earlier
there's no smile
no kindness
Fevered hands work with excitement
loving care is taken to make sure
all the rat poison makes it into the cookie batter
not a drop is wasted
bake for ten minutes
happiness in fifteen...

Wake up...
