This Romantic Tragedy

A Chapter by Brandon Lee Cochran

Why is this happening!? Why couldn't she have my immunity from this plague of infection!? Tears were starting to form in my eyes, but I couldn't cry. I had to be strong. So many questions were flying through my mind. Was I damned to suffer? To watch as everyone I loved die? My family, my friends, my love.... Curse this f*****g apocalypse and damn those who started it! I rose to my feet, my head down covering my eyes so that Madi and Angel couldn't see the tears that were threatening to fall. I can't let her live to turn into a zombie and kill us all... but I also couldn't kill her for I loved her.... Angel, still on her knees crying, and Madi aiming her gun at Angel's head, finger ready to pull the trigger at any given moment. ''Madi, lower your gun....''

She turned to face me, still pointing the gun at Angel. ''Are you f*****g crazy!? Shes infected! Your the one that told us that when their infected they are no longer themselves anymore and must be put to rest.''

I raised my head to look at her directly in the eye. ''I know, Madi. I taught you not to take any risk. And look where we are now. You, pointing a gun at one of your closest friends, and me trying to decide the fate of her. I don't want to play god. I can't choose a persons fate. Life or death, I can't do it. But I have to. Lower your weapon, Madi... please....''

She staired at me for a moment then nodded and lowered her gun and backed away. Angel looked up at me, her face moist from the tears that went down her face like a river of sorrow. ''Brandon, you have to do it.... Kill me. End me now before I die and reanimate and end up killing you....''

I knelt down beside her ''Do you have any idea what your asking me? You want me to end your life. There most be something I can do....'' We both knew there was nothing I could do.

She took her and and gently set it on my neck. ''The only thing you can do is release me from this hell.''

I lowered my head. Stood up and started to walk away. I mumbled under my breath ''Goodbye, my love....'' I drew my sword and spun around slicing her head from her shoulders. Blood covered the blade and my hands. The rest of it flowed from her body painting the ground like a crimson lake. Dark, full of death, full of sorrow.... I sheathed my sword and started walking away in silence. Madi followed me at a distence knowing I wanted to be alone. Not only do I have the blood of my friends and family on my hands, I also have the blood of the woman I loved. I'm now just as heartless as the zombie f***s out there.

We finally reached the cargo ship wear Aaron was keeping and eye on Janie and was waiting for our return. Not a word was spoken between Madi and I. She dragged her bag of gathered supplies as I carried Angels. We reached the Captains lodge and set the bags on the floor. Madi looked at the person in the bed, Janie. She was stunned at first then smiled slightly. Aaron looked up at me and saw the blood on my hands. ''Run into trouble out there?'' he asked. Madi looked at him and shook her head warnimg him not to press on the subject but he didn't listen. ''Well? Whos blood is it, dip s**t?'' I glared at him, my eyes blood shot looked even redder with the crimson in them. He finally realized Angel was not amung us. ''Bro... where is Angel?'' He looked at me concerned.

I looked at him dead in the eyes and said ''Shes where this hell can no longer harm her....'' I replied.

Aaron stood and walked over to me and patted my back. ''I'm sorry bro.''

I sat in a chair accross from where are new comrade was still unconcious. I shut my eyes and broke away from this nightmare... for now....
