Only We Can Save Us

Only We Can Save Us

A Poem by Brad P

I used to view the world through the eyes of an optimist,
Maybe I'm jaded, all I know is I've seen a lot of s**t,
A lot of its more than enough to change my view of the world and the people in it,
And I realized that evil and sin is sin and evil no matter which way you spin it,
I'm sick of politics and politicians, I'm sick of their of lies,
They manipulate the system so they get rich as American's die,
I wonder why we're so quick to "help" a country as their troubles brew,
whether they were invaded from outside or raided from within during a coup,
We send our soldiers, our money, our weapons and teach them to kill,
But what we really want is their lands' resources and the new leaders to bend to our will,
We give them all that, but what about us helping home?
One and a half million homeless here, but we're over there controlling who sits on some throne,
I'm not saying we shouldn't help out others when we can,
To use our influence to help the powerless maintain control of their land,
But what I'm trying to say is we as a nation are rotting inside,
Picture a doctor that's been shot, bleeding out as he treats sick patients while he dies,
It doesn't make sense, but sense isn't common, and that is what's going on,
I guess we're so accustomed to power we don't use our brains, only brawn,
We have to save ourselves before we can help others with any chance of success,
If we just took a second to assess ourselves and build a process for us to progress,
When and where'd we go wrong? The timeline's a blur,
And we still have the resources to become greater than we ever were,
But if you still think we're a superpower of the world you're a long way from getting it,
I don't think a superpower would have a 20 Trillion dollar deficit,
How can we benefit when all the current candidates are the worst bunch in history,
even their slogans suck, don't believe me-- let's start with Hillary's:
Hillary For America, that's the best she could think of to claim?
well, Jeb Bush only added an exclamation point to the end of his name,
Trump say's he'll Make America Great Again, but he'd blows us all up in his first term,
Kasich's K for US; Bernie wants us to Feel The Bern,
Rubio says he'll bring A New American Century,  Ben Carson's insane:
Heal + Inspire + Revive, he's also the guy who thinks the pyramids were only used to store grain,
Speaking of crazy, I wasn't surprised that Ted Cruz is going insane again,
Says he's Reigniting The Promise of America, I'd normally take 'Reignite' as a threat-- but Cruz's Canadian,
It's clear that someone's trying to fit in with the times,
A Hashtag starts the slogan 'It's In Our Hands', And I agree with Jill Stein,
Our fate is in our hands, we control our own destiny,
You're ignorant if you sit on your a*s thinking what's meant to be's meant to be,
Especially if you care about your life, it's easy, let's be honest,
So read up on the issues, read between the lines and the lies disguised as a promise...

I agree with your thoughts. Hard election for the USA. A real turning point.
"Our fate is in our hands, we control our own destiny,"
We keep spending money we do not have. USA will fall like the many great countries of the past. Thank you Brad for sharing your thoughts on a important topic.

You are the living proof that there are critical thinkers in the US, contrary to the prevailing opinion in Europe (which I don't share for I have spent time in the States).
I share your worries, which you have phrased very well. I like that you added rhyme, too; call me old-fashioned but I believe that poems should rhyme.

Just one remark about moving to Europe: we are in a deep crisis right now as well. There is no unity as to how to handle the continuing influx of fugitives and the EU countries are drifting further and further apart. Our societies are radicalizing and with the upcoming elections there is a real danger of nationalist parties rising.

Youre 10000% percent right on this. And you aren't the only person who is terrified of where we're headed. My father is furious with me for not liking any of the candidates and for not really wanting to vote..I'm stuck! And I'd really like to move to Europe. I just don't get how our country has sunk so low. :(

How about you run for president?
