Litter

Litter

A Poem by Brad Nugent

I stood in the stairwell

discarded pieces of litter

blew in the breeze

as child followed child:

ignoring the debris,

refusing to stoop down

with a helping hand.

Suitably indignant

in well-rehearsed tones,

I chastised loudly,

as any responsible

role model should.

A long day of such

significant matters

later and later that night

I drove home alone

through dark streets.

A young woman sat

in storefront shadows,

rocking and distressed.

My eyes met hers.

And I drove on

as car followed car,

Humming in unison

'Hope she's alright...'

That much is all

and so much for what

responsible role models

should.
