Tropical Rain

Tropical Rain

A Poem by Brad Nugent

light
travels through air
much faster than sound
in spite of the preferable
primeval theories
only physics
truly knows why
we see
lightning
blinding against
a dark blank sky
piercing the heavy
cumulonimbus
as if they were
not kings of clouds
but wisps
of cottony film
a sole stray thread
a nuisance
of insignificance...
and then we hear
the bellowing
rumbles
of thunder
that musical overture
my kind of sound
the fulfillment
of anticipation
echoing through
the atmosphere
and circulating
aromatic wafts
of renewal
and rebirth
the heaven-given
smell of rain
freshly squeezed
from a humid
sky
finally spilled
and as quickly
dried

I absolutely love this... maybe it is just me and my optimism and love of rain but to me the last verse had a sense of joy.

I love your short lines and the fast pace that it lends your writing. I loved the sense of anticipation and the visual picture i could create around such a simple topic.

And lastly I love that you bring other senses to this... the sound and the smell of the rain and thunder.

Maybe the gushiest review ever !

This is gorgeous! It made me think of the Sahara Desert, being pounded by rain.........then it dries up as quickly as it came. Nice!

This is a beautiful scene you have painted with grand word usage. It takes you to another place and I love storms so this poem is a great one to me.

Elemental, my dear Watson ... this is a reflective and descriptive poem, quite philosophical in its way. The structure is short and sharp, yet the images and sounds it evokes linger much longer. Awesome writing.
