Closer Than Before

Closer Than Before

A Poem by Brad Nugent

"
Thanatos inclination
orbits my soul
and permits the extension
of palpable barriers
designed with the intention
of keeping you distant
for fear the closeness
will lead to rejection.

It may be intrigue
that makes you ignore them.
Refusing to abandon,
Provoking attention
to the moment that is.

You reach out with love
for the ersatz remoteness
built into my heart.
That unbreakable fear
dissolves with your words
to spell an awakening -

I listen.
I hear.

And I finally feel
the serenity
of peace
within.

This, for me, is a very powerful piece of writing. You "spell an awakening" with words that trigger many thoughts about life and love.

I like Jessi's review! This is seriously in a realm far above contemporary Australian, or indeed any modern poets today. Letting go of the need for barriers to protect oneself, to make oneself vulnerable, is a lesson I need to learn, too. That allusion to death circling around us is most apt. Very, very well done.
