Chapter 1A Chapter by Byron Crossmy very first day‘Brrr’ my phone
rang ‘Brrr, Answer me, answer me, ANSWER
ME DAMNIT!’ I got up at the sound of my ring tone and saw who was calling
me; it said Demi with a picture of us laughing together “Hello,’ I said in a raspy voice “why are you calling me” “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!,” I heard Demi shout into the phone “I
thought to stay up late and call you at exactly midnight but it took you a
while before you picked up the phone so it’s now one past twelve, good morning” “It’s what time!”
I shouted aloud “One past twelve, buts that’s only because you didn’t pick
up the phone…” “We have school today if you hadn’t noticed, THE first day
of school to be precise” I interrupted her “I know how depressing, it’s your birthday and it’s the
first day of school. Oh the girls and I have been talking and we thought to
throw you a party, but not a surprise party but don’t tell them I told you
because we were supposed to tell you today together and they wanted it to be a
surprise” Demi said “Okay I won’t but can I get back to bed please I’m
exhausted?” I asked her “Sure whatever, bye-bye kisses” “Kisses” I replied before hanging up and going back to bed
“b***h”
…… …… “David wake up, it’s five” Called my step dad “DAVID!” “Yes!” I shot up out of my bed into the cold air of my room
“Oh my word it’s so cold and why did you shout?” “To wake you up” he said “Come it’s the first day of school
get ready” ‘I’m finally in grade
ten, wow’ I thought “Okay, I’m getting ready” I replied As I got dressed my phone rang, I unlocked my iPhone and saw
it was a message from my gran wishing me a happy birthday. I smiled. I finished getting changed and I got my timetable they gave
us the previous year to check what books we need today, “day three” I said to
myself Drama, double AD math, CAT, double Afrikaans, double English I cringed at the thought of double Afrikaans on the first
day of the year “What a lovely way to start the year, perfect” I said
sarcastically, I prayed for the day to go by quickly but for the math and
English period to last a century, when at last I packed my bag I took myself
and my bag out into the lounge. I could smell breakfast cooking “I love that smell of cooking oil so early in the morning” I
said to whoever was cooking “Good morning, my baby happy birthday did you have a nice
sleep?” my mom asked “Sweet Jesus never ever say that again PLEASE” I told my mom She laughed heartedly “I’m just saying I love you and that
you are growing quickly but I can’t wait until you leave” “The feeling’s mutual” I said “Good, there are the papers on the coffee table for a flat I
bought you can live there, ill pack your bags” she said sarcastically “Ha ha” I replied to her comment as I picked up the forms on
the coffee table “Holy s**t you actually bought a flat, why?” “When you move out you’ll have a place to stay” my mom
answered my question “Uh mom I’m moving to Stellenbosch to study” I told her “Just calm your horse we don’t know that yet” she said
angering me I took in a breath “Yes, yes I know you don’t have the
money, so let’s start saving we can open up an account at the bank lock he card
and pin away and we can put money on it each month, and dad said you guys will
pay half each for the first year and if I do badly I will have to pay for the
last five years” I repeated this for the fifth time this year “Okay we’ll see” my mom assured me “Thanks, so what’s for breakfast?” I asked her “Bacon, eggs, chips and some toast” she answered me “Yum” I said excited to eat
