Broken and Desperate

A Story by Adam Faison

When you get pushed over the edge, you have no idea what you will do. Especially if you get pushed for love.

Sixteen year old Jason walks into his school with his right hand in his hoodie pocket. He seems to be very nervous about something and starts to sweat. He walks by classmates and thinks they just go on like nothing is happened.  He continues to walk down the hall seeing a few students who seem to be affected by the school’s recent tragedy. A day ago, Jessica Miller was found murdered in a river (her favorite river). She had a blow to her head that resembled a hammer. She had already been missing for two days, but Jason had not imagined the worst until they found her body. Jessica Miller had been the girl that was outgoing and the one people would call weird. She had also been Jason’s best friend.

Jason walked into his first class and looked at two boys sitting in the back of the room talking. He glared at them with a stare of death. He saw that the room already had five other teens in it, including the two in the back. The teacher was already at her desk reading a book. It was still early to be in first period, but he figured it would be better that way for what he was about to do. He then closed and locked the door to the classroom.

The teacher looked at Jason and said “What are you doing Jason?”

Jason looked at the teacher and said “What has to be done.” He then pulled out the pistol in his pocket. The teacher screamed as did the other two girls in the room. “Shut up!” he yelled at the class. “I am only here to give those two what they deserve!” he pointed at the two boys in the back. “Don’t worry,” he said at the two boys, “I am not going to kill you yet. First I want all to see what kind of animals you are. I am going to make you confess your sin. So they all know that I did the right thing; that I justified the death of Jessica.” The two boys looked confusingly at Jason as he said “Don’t act like you don’t know what you did! I know you killed my friend Jessica!”

The class then went dead silent. “Yeah, that’s right. They killed her. They always said they were going to, and they finally did it! But before we get started, let’s barricade the door!” He then forced the teacher and the girls in the room move the teacher’s desk in front of the door. He then pointed at the phone and said to call the police. “I want them to be here to witness my doing. They will see what kind of people those two are.” He then pointed the gun at the two in the back. “So Kyle and Mike, which one of you is going to be the first to spill your guts?”

2       Two days before Jessica’s disappearance:

“They are ok.” Jason said as Jessica asked him if he liked One Direction.

“Ok! Just ok! They are amazing!” Jessica yelled at him and slapped him in the arm.

“Ow! What! It’s true!” He laughed as he spoke. Jessica just shook her head and continued to eat her lunch. They were at school and lunch was about to end. “So, how are things going at home?”

“Well, you know dad. He is always mad about something and screaming at me.” Jason just nodded his head and finished his food. The bell rang and the two returned to their classes.

The bell for school’s ending rang and the students flooded out. “Another day finished!” Jessica said with enthusiasm.

“Yeah! Just 35 more days to go!” Jason yelled and pumped his fist. They both laughed at that.

“Hey, do you want to go down to the river?” Jessica asked.

“Yeah sure.” Right after Jason answered; she grabbed his arm and began to run. He stumbled for a bit before catching his footing. They both ran side by side and the same speed. Jason looked at Jessica as they ran. He and she had been friends for so long, and he never felt the way he did now. He looked at her hair and her beautiful skin and felt a feeling he thought he would never feel with her. He felt love. And not sisterly love as he always had.

He pushed those thoughts away and kept running. They arrived at the river a few minutes later. “Do you remember the first day we met here?” Jessica asked.

“Yeah, it feels like yesterday. I had just moved here and decided to explore.”

            “Yeah same here.”

“It must have been fate for us to meet here. And look at this place now! It is our favorite place to hang.” Jason raised his arms as he made that last remark.

“Yeah it is hard to believe that that was three years ago.” Jessica seemed to drift off as if she was thinking about something. “Jason, I have started to feel…” But before she could finish, Kyle and Mike was walking up to them.

“What’s up retards?” Kyle asked as he approached them.

“What do you guys want?!” Jason said fast and angrily.

“What’s the problem? Aren’t you glad to see us?” Mike asked.

“You’re the problem and no I am not happy to see you.” Jason said firmly.

“Well, mister butthole. Why don’t you let weirdo Jesso answer for once?” Kyle said with a voice that made Jason almost punch him in the face.

“Maybe I don’t want to talk, because I might puke if I open my mouth. Because of your smell of course.” Jessica said. Kyle looked at her with a death stare.

“Shut up weirdo! I really don’t care if you talk or not!” Kyle said with anger. That set Jason on fire. He leaped on to Kyle and began to pound on his face. Mike was in a daze for a second before pulling Jason off. He threw Jason onto the ground. Jason made a sound of pain as he landed on a rock.

Jessica then picked up a small rock and threw it at Mike. It hit him on his left hip. “You’re going to pay for that you piece of crap!” Mike screamed. Jason then got up and tackled Mike. Kyle was still dazed. Jason then got up and grabbed Jessica and ran. They both ran until they got to Jason’s house. They then took a breath.

“Well this will be a day to remember.” Jason proclaimed. They both let out a nervous laugh.

“Yeah, I have a feeling they will never let us forget this.” Jason never did forget that day. He never did.

Twenty minutes had passed and the police had arrived. Jason sat at the front of the room with the gun pointed at Kyle and mike. He had them on their knees by the window. He hid behind the wall beside the window. He did not want the police to miss the show, but he did not want them stopping him before he did what he had to. The other three teens, with the teacher, were at the back of the room.

“We didn’t do anything man, I swear!” Kyle said with tears in his eyes.

“Lies! Nobody else would have killed her, not even her own father! Nobody else had a motive!” Jason screamed at them. They both began to cry as he shoved the gun repeatedly in their face. The phone then began to ring. It must be the police trying to reason with me Jason thought. He picked up the phone and said “Don’t try to talk me out of this, because I am going to show you who the real problem is. I am going to prove that those two over at the window killed my Jessica. I am going to leave this on speaker for you to hear.” He then put the phone on speaker and the policeman began to speak.

“Son, we need you to just calm down and tell us what is wrong.” The policeman said.

“What’s wrong?! My best friend Jessica is dead because these two idiots wanted revenge!” Jason yelled.

“Why would they have wanted to kill her?” Jason then told the policeman about the threats that Kyle and Mike would give to Jessica. Then the policeman calmly said “Son, I am sure that these two had no real intention of killing your friend. They were just bullying you and her. They would never resort to murder.”

“How would you know how far they would go?! I am going to show you the real animals inside them.” He then walked over by Kyle and Mike and placed the barrel of his gun on Kyle’s forehead. “So Kyle, you want to tell me how you did it?”

“I didn’t do anything I swear!” he said with spit flying out of his mouth.

“Lies!” Jason screamed and pistol whipped Kyle.

The policeman then yelled “Please stop this madness! We have not have time to investigate this case properly. Let us prove that they are not the ones that killed Jessica.”

“But I know they were the one to kill her! I know it! Right Mike?” he then pointed his gun at Mike’s forehead.

“I swear Jason, on all of my life, that I did not hurt Jessica! I would have never really hurt her! I was just being a bully!” Mike yelled.

“Then who killed her Mike? WHO?!”

“I don’t know! If I knew I would tell you!”

“If you tell me Mike I will let you live”

“You will?” Mike said through his tears.

“Oh yes Mike I will.” Mike looked at Jason and then at Kyle. Kyle began to sob harder.

“You wouldn’t man! You wouldn’t!” Kyle yelled at Mike.

“I would Kyle because it is the truth. I am not going to help you and let myself die.”

“What are you talking about Mike?! I didn’t kill her!”

“Yes Mike what are you talking about?” Jason asked crazily.

“I am talking about how Kyle killed Jessica. Hit her in the head with a hammer and dumped her in the river.” Kyle sobbed harder than he had the whole time.

            “WHY MAN! WHY!” Kyle screamed.

“You see now policeman. I was right and now I can do what I need to do.” Jason said as he pointed the gun at Kyle’s head.

            “I didn’t do it man! I DIDN’T DO IT!”

            “That’s what they all say.”

“NOOOO…” but Kyle was stopped as a gunshot went off and his blood splattered on the window.

4       One day before Jessica’s disappearance

The next day Kyle and Mike began to bully Jason and Jessica even more than before. Every time they saw them in the hall the bullies would push Jason into the lockers and say, “We are going to kill you and your weirdo freak of a girlfriend.” Jason wanted to say that she was not his girlfriend, but he did wish she was. He had thought a lot last night about how he had begun to feel about Jessica.

He was trying to build up the courage to tell her how he felt, but he was scared that it might hurt their friendship. We have such a great relationship. Do I want to change that? He thought to himself as he was walking with her to lunch. “Something on your mind?” Jessica asked him.

“Nah, not really, just thinking about some things that aren’t important.” Even though what he was thinking was really important to him.

“Why are you thinking about these things if they aren’t important?”

“I don’t maybe they are important and I just don’t know it yet.”

“Maybe, just maybe.” She said as they both got their lunch and sat down. “Jason,” she said after finishing her lunch, “I never got to tell you what I was going to yesterday. You know, before Kyle and Mike came by.”

            “Well, what is it?”

“I can tell you anything, right? And nothing will ever change are relationship, correct?” she asked him.

“Yeah, of course, what is it you need to say.” Deep down he knew what she was going to say, and it made him feel like the happiest man on earth.

“Well…. follow me.” She got up and he followed her. She took them by their lockers where the hall was deserted.

“What do….” But before he could finish she kissed him right on the lips. He didn’t pull back until she did a few moments later.

“That’s what I needed to tell you.” Jason then begun to kiss her again and they went for a longer time.

“I was just begging to feel the same way, but I was afraid it might ruin our relationship.” Jason said.

“Nothing can ruin our relationship Jason, because I love you way too much to let you go. They kissed one more time before going on to their next classes.

School had ended for the day and Jason and Jessica were walking home, holding hands. They were feeling great till the two that hated them most stepped in front of them. “Hey you pieces of crap.” Kyle said first.

“Get out of our way.” Jason said firmly and tried to push by them as Mike pulled out a pocket knife.

“I don’t think so.” Mike said as he waved the knife around and pushed Jason back.

“We got a score to settle with you two. We aren’t going to kill you, now at least. Just here to get you ready for what is to come.” Kyle said, unknowing that a few days later he wouldn’t be ready for what was to come to him.

“Yeah, you two messed with us and now you going to pay. We don’t ever forget what people do.” Mike said with malice. Kyle then grabbed Jessica and took the knife from Mike.

“Yeah, we never forget.” He acted as thought he was going to cut Jessica, though he wasn’t going to.

Jason then said, “If you hurt her…”

“I am not going to hurt her, badly.” Kyle said with a sinister smile. Then, just after he said that a man walked out of the house they were standing into front of.

“Hey! You stop that over there. Don’t make me call the police!” the man yelled at them.

“We are just having some fun old man!” Kyle yelled, “Well you are lucky this time. Guess we will just have to pick this up some other time. You can thank the old man!” Kyle yelled that last part loudly so the man could hear him. Kyle and mike walked away laughing and the older man walked up to Jason and Jessica.

“Are you two alright?” He asked them.

“Yeah, we are fine.” Jessica answered.

“That one boy had a knife! He wasn’t going to cut you was he?”

“No, he was just being a jerk.” Jason said.

“Well, as long as you two are ok. I am just glad I saw them pestering you.”

“Yeah, us too, and we thank you for your help.” Jason said nicely. The man then went back to his house and Jason and Jessica began again to walk back home. They got to Jessica’s house and they kissed once more as they said goodbye. “I will see you tomorrow at school.”

“Yeah, till then.” But little did they know that that was the last time they would see each other.

The girls in the classroom, including the teacher, screamed as Kyle’s blood splattered on the window. The policeman on the phone was speechless as the he saw Kyle’s limp body fall to the ground. Tears ran down Mike’s face as he saw his best friend murdered in front of him.

“There you have it,” Jason began, “one animal down and one more to go.”

“You said you would let me go!” Mike screamed.

“I did, but then I thought that maybe you were lying about it just being him. Maybe you were lying about it being him at all, but now he is gone and only you are left. So I guess you will have to be punished too.”

“Wait! Please stop!” The policeman screamed through the phone. Jason looked toward the phone. “We have new evidence in the case of the murder!”

“That is just a lie to get me to slow down.” Jason said firmly.

“It is not a lie.” The policeman began to calm. “I just got word from the station that they have a new suspect that they are pursuing.”

            “Who?!” Jason said with haste.

“They did not tell me. They only said that they were bringing him in for questioning now.” Jason stood in silence for a minute.

“You have an hour to give me new info…” Jason said and the policeman interrupted.

            “Thank you sir!”

“…while I try to get the real suspect to talk.” Jason said as he turned towards Mike. Mike’s bladder than let go.

It was forty five minutes into the hour that Jason gave the policeman and Mike’s face was badly bruised. The policeman outside could do nothing to stop Jason. But then the policeman had a thought. He held his hand over the mouthpiece of the phone to speak to the other officers on the scene. “Have we got any more on the suspect?”

“They have brought him into the station for questioning now sir. They say he seems very nervous.” Another officer answered.

The policeman with the phone said “Get a sniper and breaching team ready. I do not want to resort to that, but this is a desperate time.”

“But sir, do you think the chief will approve of the shooting of a teenager?”

“Not in a million years, but like I said…. this is a desperate time.

It was five minutes till the hour was up and Jason had done a number on Mike. Mike had said that he killed Jessica at least twenty times in that hour, but Jason was giving the policeman time. I know that these two killed Jessica, but I will let the policeman have his time. Just for him to know that he is wrong and that I am doing the right thing. Jason thought to himself as the policeman on the phone began to talk.

“Son, we have some news on the case.” That you are wrong Jason thought with a smile on his face. “The suspect we have confessed to the murder.” What! He is lying to me. “That suspect is…” but before he could finish, a truck roared by him. The truck was heading for the window of the classroom. Jason looked to see a man with a gun in the truck. The man fired at Jason and hit him in the shoulder. Jason fell to the ground in pain.

The policeman had been informed a few minutes ago that the breach team was ready and he yelled for them to go as two officers got in a police car to chase the truck. The breach team then used two battering rams to bust through the door knocking the desk out of the way. As they entered Jason stood with the gun in hand and screamed “I AM AVENGING THE ONLY ONE I EVER LOVED” right after he screamed this the sniper shot and blood flooded Jason’s shirt. He fell to his knees and looked over at Mike. Mike then grabbed the gun from Jason’s hand and pointed it at his head.

Before he could shoot Jason the policemen tackled him. Jason was on his knees with blood covering his shirt. The policeman from the phone walked in to hear Jason’s final words. “Who was the suspect?”

The policeman looked at him with pity and said “It was her father. He confessed to her death.” Jason just laughed and blood flowed from his mouth.

“Guess I will have to get my revenge in hell….” He drifted off with a smile on his face.

Epilogue

“Yesterday was a horrifying day for the little town of Hemmingworth, Maine. A teenage boy, Jason Gregory, walked into his school and held a class hostage with a gun. His motive was to avenge the death of his close friend Jessica Miller, who was found murdered the day before in a river close by. He believed that two other teenage bullies had been the ones who killed her. In his blind rage he executed one of the boys, Kyle Johnson. He then tortured the other boy, Mike Lennon, till he was told by local Policeman Freddy Felson that they had found out who the real killer was. The police had brought in Richard Miller, the father of the late Jessica Miller, for questioning where he confessed to his daughter’s murder. He said that ‘I was in a blind rage; furious with her for no good reason. And I reached for something to hit her with and I found a hammer. Next thing I know she is dead in my arms. I didn’t mean to do it!’

“Before the policeman was able to say who the suspect was, a red truck drove up to the window of the classroom and shot at Jason, hitting him in the shoulder. The man was later found out to be Kyle Johnson’s father, who informed of his son’s death not long after he was killed. The father was apprehended and is being held for further questioning. Policeman Freddy Felson then sent in a breach team to apprehend Jason. Jason was shot by a police sniper when they thought he was about to shoot the breach team. Jason Gregory was pronounced dead at the scene. The father of Jessica Miller was given ten years for his crime. This is Carrie Jenson for 27 News.”

Richard Miller was released from Prison ten years later. He then went home and hung himself from guilt. The father of Kyle Johnson got months in prison for interfering with a police case. Mike Lennon wrote a book on his experience and became slightly famous. A movie was made about the incident a few years later. Jason Gregory is buried in local cemetery where his grave rests beside the late Jessica Miller.
