Chapter 1: Chosen

Chapter 1: Chosen

A Chapter by Anne Hudson

I sit at the only table in the room, messing with a blank piece of paper. People walk past the open door not even glancing at me.
I fold the paper over, backwards, side to side and make it into an airplane.
My head stays bowed as I twist the paper into a square, the window behind me illuminating the room. Some say I have a weird mind for this spot. It wasn't open like the rest of the space but I still sit here, tranquilized.
People say I have a big vocabulary for my age, being only eleven but that doesn't matter to me.
Suddenly there's a loud thump.
I stare at the doorway as blue static crawls through the walls, like a laser scanning something. It makes a sizzle as it passes through the room, going back toward the doorway, and traveling on. My triangle of paper sits still in my hands as I hear all movement stop.
A roll of earth travels through the hallway as someone runs with it. I then see a wave of water lead someone sprinting down the hall. A gust of wind sprints down the same way with someone trying to follow as quickly as they can. All that is left is fire.
I wait but no heat, light, or anything comes through the passage.
All the elements knew something was wrong, the last member missing.
There's another thump and suddenly the walls are light with fire, hugging the wall without ever moving away from it. It moves and flickers as a solid wall of fire. The hall in front of me had the same effect, and so did all the others.
The fire memeber is gone.

A paper sits on my desk. The fire member was still alive, he just layed on the floor, still and asleep. The stone was gone, searching for a new person that would take his place.
The elements each had a stone, wind a little blue almost white and clear, earth a brown that was warm with green spread around it, water a murky blue with yellow sun rays shining through it like a lake's surface, fire a settle see through red with black veins wrapped around it mixed with yellow.
Each element chooses a person to protect the stone. Which ever stone the person gets, they control that element. We train to become a gardian for one of the stones. We have to wait till we're at age, older then fifteen till we even get close to one of the stones. We only know what they look like from pictures in books, nothing more.
The fire still licks the walls. The stone hasn't found another guardian, even though a whole room is filled of prepared guardians.
But I know that none of them will get the stone. Something told me it wouldn't want any of the others. The rest of the guardians are very powerful and it wants an equally powerful protecter.
I look up from making the paper into another paper airplane. The flames still stay carfully on the walls when suddenly they flicker out. The heat leaves the room and hallways and I sit there stunned.
A new presence, a new sorce of greater heat comes from the hall. I sit there confused when I shrug. Mabye the stone finally choose someone.
I turn back to my paper when it suddenly bursts into flame and turns to ash. I scream, no sound coming out and the ashes fall onto my lap. I breathe in and out, loudly and slowly when the ashs float up, sitting before me. I look at it, my eyes wide with fascination when I see the stone.
It sat before me, laying on the table with a bright blazing fire in the middle. I stare at it, not wanting to look away. The black veins sit at the bottom of the stone and the rest an ember like color, calm and resting. The fire blazed when the flame grew bigger, showering the edges of the inside of the stone.
I reach toward it, the heat growing intently by the movement when the flame reaches toward me. I stop and it tries to touch me, only being stopped by the edge of the stone. I reach toward it when I touch it.
A glimpse of memories flash before me; fire destroying a whole forest, then new plant life following quickly behind it. A whole town surviving a harsh winter from a single source of fire. A warm place where a strong but composed fire sits waiting patiently. A wall of fire stretches high before crashing onto a threatening army. A fire raging to control a huge storm. It spreading across...
Too much for now.
The images fade and I stare as the fire still reaches to where I still touch the stone. I stare at it.
It's about as big as my palm, a little smaller. I lift my finger and see that where I touched it had turned a ruby colored red, seeming like a curious color.
I look at the room around me when the stone starts to pulse. I stare at it when I feel the ground shake, followed by the sound of water, then a gust of wind. The stone seems to grow and my eyes widen. Fire then sprouts from the ground, creating a circle around me.
The heat grows hotter, more intense when the stone gets wrapped with the ashes of my paper. I stare at the stone and the ashes disappear into it, the flame flickering. The heat reaches me and I watch the fire keep swirling around me. Then, all of it gathers and reaches toward me. I'm as still as still as a statue, the waves of fire flowing toward me. It reaches toward me, the heat growing and I want to flinch away but I stay there, watching the thread of fire. I sweat greatly, the heat being so intense the drops of water doesn't even become vapor. It reaches, only sitting a centimeter from me and I close my eyes. The heat begins to melt me but I allow it.
I either get excepted or I'll get too hot.
I wait, the heat melting me away, when it touches me.

...

I open my eyes and immediately welcome the sensation of heat overwhelming me.
A girl stares at me. I feel my eyes settle and she gives me an angered look, crinkling her nose.
"She lives," she mutters almost with distaste. I sit up and a boy walks in front of me. I look into his eyes and something immediately says Water.
"You ok?" he asks, offering a hand. I nod and deliberately take his hand. He stands me up and I feel heat swarm through my body from the movement.
"The stone?" the girl asks, looking at me. I immediately lift my right hand up and hold the fire stone sitting in my palm. It's blistering red like it was scared.
"Thank you," she says and reaches toward the stone. My eyes flash and the stone's flame bursts angerly, a plume of smoke rises up and wraps around my wrist. The girl stops short and the smoke turns into a solid chain, not going to let go of my hand and making sure the stone stays there.
"Calm down," the boy tells the girl.
"She shouldn't have it," the girl hisses. I look at her and show her I understand what she is saying. The girl turns to the space behind the boy to the left as someone walks over.
"She's awake?" a voice asks. The ground rumbles and another boy stands before me.
He had subtle brown eyes with messy short light brown hair. The other boy, water, has grayish blue eyes that reflected light greatly. His black hair sits short on his head. The girl has light brown hair also, always swaying gently. Her light sky blue eyes are also settle and carries knowledge.
The brown eyed boy was earth, the blue eyed boy water, and the girl air.
"She has fire," the earth whispers. I look at him and then look down at the stone.
"Alright, where is everyone?" a voice asks. We all turn and a tall young man walks toward us. He has light green eyes that searches us each. He also has black hair, and about twenty years in age.
"We're here," the water says.
The man walks over and smiles at me.
"This is the earth protector, Payce. The water protector Kay. And the air protector Clair," the man greets. I nod seeing I was right that Payce is the earth protector, pointing to each as they said their name. Kay's name strikes me, somehow knowing it means fire and instead he's protecting water. Clair is a bold girl, someone who carries on tradition.
"What's yours?" Payce asks, his brown eyes kind and soft.
I don't answer.
"Shy?" Kay asks. I nod and Clair looks me over.
"Well I'm Zach. And you my dear are very young," the man says. I nod in agreement and Clair crosses her arms as she looks me over.
"Twelve?" Clair guesses. I point my figure toward the ground showing to go down a year.
"Eleven," Zach whispers. I nod and the stone finally frees my hand, sitting there patiently.
"She's too young. There are plenty of trained people in the bunks to take on the fire stone. She's not only too young but inexperienced, only have seeing the stone for the first time," Clair mutters.
"True, but she has been chosen. She's passed the test," Kay says looking at me. I remember when the fire touched me, light flashing and heat overwhelming me. I had actually enjoyed it. I never feel the amount of heat I want everyday. It's too cold.
"How do you feel?" Zach asks me. I stare at him then look at the ground.
"Whats wrong?" Payce asks. I look at them all and sigh. No sound came out and I look at them helpless. I open my mouth and will for some sound to come out, a squeak, name, call, something. Nothing does.
"Can you speak?" Clair asks. I shake my head and look at the ground.
"I'm sorry," Kay whispers. He kneels in front of me and lays a hand on my shoulder. His gray eyes flash and they suddenly look like the surface of a lake, with light shining through the gental waves. I stare in awe and feel my eyes change. I see them in his waves of light blue. A small fire crawling toward the top of my eye, wrapping around whatever shows in my eye not touching it. His eye then changes back to normal and I blink, the fire dissipating.
"You ok my dear?" Zach asks. I nod and search Kay's face.
"She's the fire protector," Kay announces. He stands up and looks at the rest. Zach nods silently and Payce nods all the way. Clair looks at me then finally nods.
"Alright, so what's your name?" Zach asks. My mind goes blank when I lift my first finger up. I focus on it then fire sprouts on the tip, waiting patiently. I then draw my name and the three protectors stare at me. I drop my hand and in the air my name sat in a blazing fire above me. I then smile and their eyes flash their own element. My name, Phoenix.

...

"Hey," Kay says. I jump and my paper suddenly turns into ashes as a flame appears in my hands. I glare at him and he smiles.
"Kay," Payce says as he runs past. Kay races after him and I race after Clair as she runs past.
"You've always been silent?" she asks. I nod and she looks at me. We burst through the doors of the training room and stand with the boys.
"You know?" Kay asks.
"What?" Payce answers.
"We didn't introduced Phoenix correctly," Kay replies. Payce suddenly smiles and the two turn to me. Immediately I knew what they would do and shake my head.
"What?" Payce asks. I point to them and mouth the word mud.
"How'd you know?" Kay asks. I cross my arms and Clair laughs.
"That's the first time someone saw through their plan," Clair says. Payce looks at me then thrusts his hands toward me. The ground flings toward me and I leap over it like it was a wave of water. I then duck as he throws a boulder at me and blow on my hand. Ashes spread toward him as he laughs, thinking I was weak and could only do that. I dodge another boulder and concentrate on the ashes that floated right in front of him. My eyes close, still ducking his moves and I suddenly open my eyes as the ashes burst into full on fires. Payce yelps and I twist my hands, the fire shaping into a small cage around him. I breathe heavily as I keep my hands twisted and walk toward him. He try's to use the earth to get rid of the fire but I heat up the cage so everything melts to nothing. I stand before his cage and Payce sits there bewildered. I close my eyes then drop my hands, the fire disappearing completely.
"How?" Payce asks, still sitting on the ground. I shake my head then instinct tells me something. I breathe deeply then rest my hand on his check. Payce searches my eyes when I close them and heat warms my whole body.
A memory, old and past many lifetimes appears. They show how fire would connect to someone, showing what people who once controlled it was able to help the person who had it in the present. It would help them use it, shape it, and control it when most needed.
The voices and images stop and I gentaly open my eyes as I drop my hand. Payce looks at me and a small smile forms on his lips.
"Smart girl," he whispers. I roll my eyes and he winks at me. I then point my finger in front of me, showing him to keep what I had showed him a secret. Payce nods and I help him up.
"That was incredible," Kay says as we turn to them.
"I'm surprised she beat me," Payce mutters.
"My turn," Clair says as wind blows her hair back. I turn to her, see that the wind only sat behind her and snap my fingers. A ring of fire surrounds her feat and cuts off the wind's access as it raises high alive her in a swirling tornado. I narrow my eyes at the mass of fire and it stays there protectingly. I then close my eyes and the fire dissipates. Clair stands up and looks at me.
"Ok, Phoenix wins," Kay declares.
"That was too easy," Clair says. I shake my head at her challenge and she glares at me.
"No more," Kay tells her. Clair rolls her eyes and crosses her arms.
"Not bad for a newbie," she comments. I nod at her praise and yawn.
"Tired?" Kay asks. I shrug and he smiles.
Suddenly I feel a blanket of heat swirl around me. It covers me from head to toe. I hold my head and I try to say something when I fall back. The ground springs up and catches me as I'm layed gently onto the ground. I open my mouth to scream but nothing comes out.
I feel heat swarm my head as it makes my head burst with power. Flowing through me as it tries to free something, something from me. I try to scream again and the three are at my side. But my eyes close and I hold my head tightly.
They try to say something when the heat hits my throat. I fell something try to break free when I faint.
The heat surrounds me and I feel fire cover my body as I lose my grip with the world.

Okay so I only read to the first ... because I have to go somewhere now. But, here's what I found:

"fire, hugging the wall without ever moving away from it. It moves and flickers as a solid wall of fire."
Fire is used too much too close together.

"The fire memeber is gone."
memeber should be member

"The elements each had a stone, wind a little blue almost white and clear, earth a brown that was warm with green spread around it, water a murky blue with yellow sun rays shining through it like a lake's surface, fire a settle see through red with black veins wrapped around it mixed with yellow."
Run on sentence... I think. Try making each color a different sentence.

"train to become a gardian"
should be guardian

"The stone hasn't found another guardian, even though a whole room is filled of prepared guardians."
Guardian is used too much too close together.

"The flames still stay carfully on the walls"
should be carefully

"A new presence, a new sorce of greater heat comes from the hall."
should be source

"when the ashs float up"
should be ashes

"It spreading across... "
should be It spreads across.

I hope I can read more later. I'm a little confused as to what's happening right now but I figure that's because I'm not very far in. I'll look again later and write anything else I find along with my opinion.

Have A Nice Day!
