One Last Breath

One Last Breath

A Story by Kerri
"

[Drabble] But now I'm down to one last breath, and with it, let me say: Hold me now. I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinkin' 'Maybe six feet ain't so far down.'

Disclaimer: I don’t own the song One Last Breath by Creed, to which I used some lyrics for the summary and the name of the song for the title.

Excruciating pain wracked through her thin, frail body. But she didn’t want to close her eyes.

She was afraid that if she did, she would fall asleep. And if she fell asleep, she would never wake up.

Just because she had given up the battle didn’t mean she wasn’t scared. The cancer ate away at her, destroying her organs beyond cure.

And then it had attacked her brain.

Her family and friends watched as she slowly lost herself and deteriorated. They watched as she lay bed-ridden and wide-awake, petrified of closing her eyes, afraid of the consequences that might follow.

So, they did the only thing they could do. They just couldn’t bear to see her suffering anymore.

They slipped her a Valium, holding her hand tightly as her eyes finally slipped shut.

They weren’t opening again.
