REBECCA: 17 year - old , junior, brown hair, confident, popular

LAUREN: 13 year - old, popular, intimidating

GINA: 15 year - old, friendly, popular

TIME:
present, Fall

Place:
home, house party

EMILY is looking through her closet when she gives up and asks her sister REBECCA for clothes to wear to the party.

EMILY

    (knock, knock)
Rebecca?

REBECCA

What do you want?

EMILY

Can you open your door?

REBECCA

    (opens the door)
What Emily?

EMILY

I’m going to a party tonight . . .

REBECCA

And . . .

EMILY

Well, it’s actually a freshman party (stutters) so. . . so, I want to look good.

REBECCA

    (annoyed)
Spit it out! I don’t have all day Emily.

EMILY

Okay, well the truth is I was wondering if I could borrow something to wear and maybe some makeup . . . pleaseeee?
    (begs)

REBBECCA

Oh a high school party I see. Are Anna and Peyton going?

EMILY

High school. . . freshman. . . same thing. No, they said they didn’t want to go, but who wouldn’t want to go to a freshman party though? Do you know Lauren Meyers? She invited me.

REBBECCA

I didn’t know you were even friends with her. So what do you want to borrow?

EMILY

Your black pencil skirt, sequin skirt, and purple eyeshadow?

REBECCA

No way! How about my jean skirt, you use your own shirt, and I’ll let you borrow my eyeshadow?

EMILY

How about your black pencil skirt, I’ll use my own shirt, and you do my makeup?

REBECCA

Okay, fine.

REBECCA does EMILY’s makeup and helps her get ready for the party. Then REBECCA takes EMILY and LAUREN to the party.

LAUREN

I can’t wait for this party! Freshman parties are so much better then our babyish parties.

EMILY

I heard there is a lot of loud music, dancing, games, and other stuff.

LAUREN

(grins)

Yeah, and other stuff.

Monologue: Why did she grin when she said that? What does she mean by that? Maybe I shouldn’t have come with Lauren. I just got so excited when she asked me to come because she’s very popular, even with the freshman! Am I going to regret not just hanging out with Anna and Peyton tonight like we always do?

The girls arrive at the party.

EMILY

Thanks for driving us Rebecca.

REBECCA

(Lauren slides out of the car)

Hey Emily, call me if you need me because I don’t think you know what your getting yourself into!

EMILY

Okay.

LAUREN

Just act cool. There’s nothing freshman hate more then people who are lame.

EMILY

Aight.

LAUREN

Weren’t you listening? I just said to act cool.

EMILY and LAUREN walk in the front door of the party. LAUREN looks around to see who she recognizes.

GINA

Hey Lauren!

(shouts over the loud music signals her to come over)

LAUREN

Hey Gina! This is my friend Emily.

GINA

Oh hey Emily. I’m Gina. You look familiar.

EMILY

Yeah, I think we went to basketball camp together.

GINA

Right, right! What school do you go to?

EMILY

Lakewood.

GINA

Oh, so your only in middle school?

EMILY

Yes, eighth grade.

GINA

So you probably haven’t had a beer before. Trust me I know how those middle school parties can be. Do you know what you want? Or should I just surprise you?

EMILY

No, I’ll just stick to a Sprite.

(LAUREN nudges EMILY)

LAUREN

(whispers)

Emily, I told you to act cool.
She was joking. Surprise us.

GINA

Okay, I’ll be right back.

LAUREN nods, and GINA heads towards the kitchen.

LAUREN

Emily seriously? You told me you would act cool. Just try the beer or I’m not going to bring you back to another freshman party.

EMILY’s phone vibrates and she has a text message from her best friend Anna that reads, “Your missing out on a great movie night! Me and Peyton are watching ‘Napoleon Dynamite’.” EMILY texts REBECCA, asking her to come pick her up from the party. She acts like the text was from REBECCA, not Anna.

    EMILY

Lauren, that was a text from my sister. She said that I need to come home immediately.

LAUREN

Why?

EMILY

I don’t know. It must be pretty serious though.

LAUREN

Okay, well I guess I’m just going to stay here because this party is just starting to get good.

EMILY

Okay, well Rebecca should be here in like ten minutes. I’m sorry that I can’t stay.

LAUREN

It’s okay. I don’t think this is your kind of party anyway.

EMILY

Yeah, your right. Well, I’ll see you later Lauren. Thanks for bringing me anyway.

LAUREN

No problem.

EMILY leaves to go wait for REBECCA.

REBECCA

Why did you need a ride so early? And where’s Lauren?

EMILY

Lauren fits in at that party more then I do. Can you drop me off at Anna’s house?
