Tick

Tick

A Poem by Jaci

Would that incessant
ticking cease
the one I hear
when all becomes dark
when I should be sleeping
even then
I hear it
behind my dreams
irregular rhythms
running interference
with my own heartbeat
The mechanism's off kilter
 maybe a tooth is broken
something caught
in the cogs of time
I hear it
before my eyes
when wakening in the morning
I hold my breath
wait for the chime
but there's only the ticking
keeping odd tracks in time
I suppose
even time can pause
if left unwound
That's the moment
I've been listening for
throughout each day
