An experience in silenceA Story by BlueDevilWritten as a thank you to a friend whose silence made more sense than any words, even though silence is what separates us now.A real break from work in two years. Heady excitement as I reached the station and headed towards the resort which would be my home for the next three days, with my friend. All the tiredness from the travel was forgotten after we reached the resort, stationed in the midst of greenery and nature. Lunch was a homely affair. The friendly restaurant incharge made sure that I eat plenty as he reasoned, ‘One should eat more while on vacation, because eating at home is same as eating at the office. Rains also followed me as it started raining heavily as we headed back to the room after lunch. I could hear the rain splattering on the dry land, on the leaves and grass. And it was the only sound I could hear, of the rains. I normally do not like the monsoons, given that in the cities it means flooded roads, not only with water but garbage and waste. For the first time in many years, the rains looked beautiful. As evening dawned, one could hear the gentle sounds of the insects. My friend told me that some insects come out only after the first rains and now would be a good time to go look out for them. I have forgotten the names of most of the insects that he rattled off (much to his chagrin) but I do not remember seeing so many of them at the same time. This was not the first time I was visiting a jungle or staying at a resort in the midst of a jungle. But I never paid attention or was too busy working. There is so much to see if you pay a little attention, so much to marvel at if you only slow down, so much to listen to if only you shut off your phone and so much to hear if you revere the silence. I did all these and discovered a life beyond the confines of my AC office in the city. It took me all the way back to my childhood, to the house on the hills, the huge backyard with trees and pets, untouched by the world. The evening winds flows with the various sounds of the jungle, intoxicating and almost lulling me to sleep. My friend took me for a walk around the resort.Plenty to see and enjoy. As I watched my friend, armed with his camera chasing the smallest of the small insects, I couldn’t help feeling the amount of life around me. My coming to this place was a spur of the moment decision, on the insistence of my friend. I was living in a rut, doing the same things, day in and day out, without purpose. And here I was, away from all that. For the first time in many months, I woke up with a blank mind, without any thoughts and I wanted to take back this feeling with me when I go back. I walked behind my friend as he named insets after insects and their characteristics. The velvet termite, bright red in colour and seen only after the first rains. The tiger beetles, the wasps and many more. (My memory fails me again). I learned a few lessons of life in the jungle; patience, humility, the wonder of silence. I rediscovered patience as I watched a female wasp kill a spider and take it back to her burrow. She made several stops, dropping the spider on the way and finding her way to the burrow. I never knew I had that kind of patience, as I watched the wasp reach her destination. Walking slowly does not mean you are not in a hurry to get to your destination, but letting others get to theirs first and enjoying their journey. Watching each step to make sure you do not step on the thousands of lives breathing under your feet. The silence, after a while becomes a part of you. I could actually hear the silence after sometime. Even when I was blasting Pink Flyod through my ear phones, the same silence surrounded me. Apart from the wonderful memories, all I wanted to take back with me was that silence.
