A break from reality

A break from reality

A Story by BlueDevil

Is it really possible to take a break from reality? Today i do not feel like being in this real world, lets switch to fantasy...possible? The whole idea sounds like a good deal, especially when you have things to escape from. How convenient it would be to transform myself into a different setting, or into a whole new world altogether? Even if for a few moments.

Lets take a break from things and people that we do not want to be around with. And from pain and heart breaks, from waiting and frustrations, and from love and longing. Life would be so peaceful if only we did not have expectations. But then boring at the same time.

We all want excitement but on our own terms. Good things in life comes with a ‘terms and conditions apply’ clause. And trust me, it is written in even smaller font than the one you see on insurance and loan documents! There is no option but to agree to those terms.

I also did. Some of them, I knew were going to screw me but I still went ahead and signed on the dotted line. And the consequences are blazing right in front of me. The pain is so overwhelming that I cannot breathe; it suffocates me. And it is during these times I want to be far away from reality, in another world. A world which will let me breathe for a few moments, a world where I do not suffocate. A place without question marks and no clause attached.

That is my land of fantasy. A land of no reason. A break from reality.

But what happens when we are back from the journey? That is another story, another reality.

This is a pretty interesting short story, with a sort of universal idea, a longing, that most people have at different times - of wanting an experience separate from our own mundane reality. I particularly liked the final lines, asking the question of what happens when we return from that escape, because several possibilities come to mind. An escape, even a pleasurable one, might create in a person a longing for the very reality they wanted to escape from. As if the unreality of the escape makes the chaotic reality more valuable, for the reason that it is real. It's sort of the Wizard of Oz theme of "there's no place like home." But then again, an escape might make reality less bearable, and result in a constant desire to return to that escape. But in a way that's what substance abuser desire. It could go either way. I really like the questions that your story raises and the ambiguity of it. Good stuff!
