A WAIT OF SEASONS

A WAIT OF SEASONS

A Poem by Maureen Mwaniki

I should be at the beach

Playing polo or skiing

But I’ll sit here, bake in the heat

You promised you’d return…

Now the crickets don’t sing

Around me, a pile of red leaves

And the autumn wind chills

But am waiting for you, return…

Snow flakes dance around me

My thoughts shiver along with my feet

But no mind, you’re coming to warm me

I smile, you’ll return…

Spring’s gentle rain falls about me

With great effort I stand to leave

I look back at our spot, begin to weep

For the lover that never returned

Awww - that's one of those poems that make you want to comfort the protagonist and glare at the person who hurt them. The only thing you could change is that you wrote 'But am waiting for your return…' - you could make it 'But I am waiting for you return...' Really beautiful poem though - full of melancholy and trust.

Your words are soft and tranquil and sad.

Hope springs eternal. Again a lovely poem and such a way with prose. Disappointment in this life is inevitable I'm afraid. Lovely

summer...autumn...winter...spring. i like the way the poem progresses that way...and the way its not so obvious, one could miss it. you describe, very well, the dejectedness of an abandoned lover...too well, true story ama? :)
great work, keep writing!

A sad and beautiful written poem. I like how you use the seasons to create the emotion of needing someone and waiting. Nothing as heart braking as waiting for someone to appear and left in the misery of thoughts. A outstanding poem.
