Understand (2011-poem)

The boy, sitting across from you,

Take a closer look at him

See the pressure?

That constant daze in his eyes?

A smile across his face doesn’t mean much

I swear to you, it’s just a disguise.

See that girl walking down the hallway,

With life inside her belly?

You never gave her a chance did you?

I bet you considered her a w***e,

Little did you know, she’s a victim of rape,

Yet another defenseless girl.

That happy, smiling cheerleader,

You watch her from the stands.

You envy her, try to taunt her,

Hasn’t she had enough?

You wonder why she never backs down,

There is a reason she’s so tough.

Sometimes we judge without thinking,

We don’t look farther than the outside.

Understand that everybody has a story,

A hidden secret or two.

Somebody out there needs your help,

What will you do?
