Chapter 1

Chapter 1

A Chapter by Blessed_Angel

The day the world stood still was a normal day in New York City. People were racing down the streets trying to get to work. Cars in the road were screaming at one another with the beeps of the horn. No one ever knew what was going to occur on that faithful day on June 27, 2020. Many people never expected for the mutation to occur in a simple pizza either. All it took was one person to eat the pizza and the mutation was out. This mutation was not the zombie mutation it was something completely different. This turned the person in to a killing machine. This monster they turned in to looked like a mix between a grizzly bear and satin himself. The Mutation was spread from a scratch or a bite. Yes this sounds like a zombie thing but they are worse than zombies.

These monsters would kill you and consume every bit of you in one gulp like a snake does with its victims.  You might think that the person next to you is not carrying the disease but you might be wrong as well. See the mutation dose not start to show up till five days after the victim is infected with it. This is how that mutation spread so fast. With no one ever knowing who had the mutation the very next person who scratches you might just be the one to get you infected with the disease. The way you go and turn in to the monster is so painful. First you will begin to lose control of your hands. Then your eye sight, smell and hearing will deplete. Finally you will go through the finale faze of changing in to the monster its self.

When this happens you are completely gone, Aka dead, and the newly improved eye sight hearing and smell has developed. You are now completely a monster or what we survivors call The Rut. Why the name Rut you say well that is what the monsters sound like when they talk. They make a rutting sound. So we just thought that The Rut was the perfect name for them and it stuck even ten years after this all happened. My name is Milissa and this is the story of our survival after The Day The World Stood Still.

                                     .                                   .                             .                          .

“You will never catch me” she laughed as she raced through the abandoned city of New York. Each crack in the road was a danger for her tripping but Milissa had never tripped yet so she was not to concerned. Even though the sun was shining it seemed unusually dark. Yes it is always a bit dark since this happened but never dark enough where you cannot see ten feet in front of you not even at night. Taking a glance back here and there to see if the Rut was still following her Milissa managed to get away from them. She turned in to a dark alley way, covered in many vines and bushes, Milissa pulled up her prize. It was a simple deer leg she took from the Rut’s camp. She knew it was a risky thing to do but since the Rut came the deer and other animals begun to disappear.

Looking back up to see if the Rut had managed to find her Milissa then knew that she had lost them. Now with the felling of victory Milissa took a few dry sticks and some dry grass to make a fire. She then managed to get a spark from rubbing two rocks together. Milissa managed to keep the fire alive to cook the deer leg but not so alive that it will give away her position. Now that she had a fire Milissa begun to cook the deer leg. The hours of slowly turning the deer leg made Milissa even more Hungary than before. It took two hours to fully cook the leg but once it was done it was the best thing Milissa had ever tasted. It had been three days since she had food. Sometimes she would go weeks without more than one bunny to eat.

Looking up at the sky Milissa sighed and leaned back on the wall. She laid her head down agents the cold brick. She covered herself with leaves and branches to hide herself from the Rut. Once that was done Milissa dozed off in to a deep sleep. In her dream she dreamed about before this happened. She was only seven when it happened. It was the day that her, her mom and dad were going to go to six flags for her birthday. Everything in the dream felt real to her. Her mom’s hug, Her dad’s kisses, The smell of her mother’s homemade pizza and even the wind that flowed through the car as they begun to drive to the theme park.

“Mommy are we really going to six flags” Milissa said with so much joy that she nearly jumped out of her seat.

Her mother turned back to her and on her face was the sweetest smile ever. Milissa could smell the raspberry perfume she wore. Oh how she longed for her mother. Her mother reached back and rubbed her face and in the sweetest voice she said. “Yes my darling we are going to Six Flags. Me and your dad would not brake that promise.” She turned to Milissa’s dad “Isn’t that right hunny?”

“That is right” Her dad was the type that usually works a lot but still manages to find time to spend with his family. Milissa you would say had a great life. Two loving parents a nice house and no worries. Until That day they went to Six Flags. The Attack did not happen to her family till they got back to the house.

Milissa was asleep in the back seat holding on to her prizes that she got from Six Flags.

“Wake up hunny we are home.” Her mom said as she opened her door. Milissa woke up to a shrill scream from her mom and their it was The Rut. “NOOOOOO!” her mom screamed and at that moment she woke up in a cold sweat. Milissa was panting from the terrible dream, her hair was drenched in sweat and her body was shaking with fright. Looking at the sky Milissa sighed and stood up to head to the old court house, where she will meet up with some other survivors to discuss some issues that is occurring.

Walking out of the ally way Milissa scanned the roads for any sign of the Rut. With relief there was no sign of the Rut anywhere.  Now in the middle of the road Milissa knew that she was now venerable to the Rut’s rath. Keeping her eyes scanning the area she knew that at least she will have a chance of surviving.  She was now only a few feet away from the old court house and to safety. As Milissa approached the court house she was greeted by Luke her friend.

“hey Milissa what took you so long to get here?” He asked with a puzzled look on his face.

Milissa shrugged “oh you know I was just wondering around and lost track of time.”

Luke shook his head in disbelief “Milissa what do you take me for? A fool? I know where you have been you were stealing from the Rut again weren’t you?”

Milissa sighed and nodded her head. She knew that she should have not lied to Luke but she did not want him to worry. Luke closed his eyes and let out a sigh of disappointment.

“Milissa you could have been killed or worse turned in to one of them.”

“But Luke I did not get scratched or caught me  ...”

“That is not the point Milissa. I promised your brother before he got killed that I will keep you safe and I will keep that promise.”

Milissa lowered her head she knew that but she never thought that he would take it so personal. Milissa looked at Luke and followed him in side. The old court house was still in pretty good shape but it had a few cracks here and there. Looking around the room she spotted a few other people. There were about seven other people in the room that was not counting Luke and herself. Even though some of those people were about ten years old they acted like they were twenty years old. Of course you would need to grow up fast in this because if you don’t you would not make it to see thirty three, if you ever live that long. See now days the average lifespan for people is around thirty nine. This is because of the Rut. The Rut is over taking the world. With every person there is ten Rut. From once a great race of millions is now a race fighting for survival.

“Ok everybody listen up.” It was Kyle who was talking. Kyle was the oldest out of all of us he was sort of considered an ancient. Kyle was around Thirty Five the oldest anyone had been since this out break. “Now everyone take a seat, and let’s begin.” He paused “The Rut is over taking our world and it is harder to survive. We need to stand together if we are going to survive. No one goes anywhere without a partner or partners. So find a partner and head out for supplies.”

Milissa looked at Luke and knew she did not even need to ask him if he would be her partner. Milissa knew that she had no choice in who she went with. Luke turned to Milissa and sighed.

“Milissa I know that you do not want to be my partner bu..”

“Luke I know you are three years older than me but that does not give you the right to control me like I am a little girl. I can take care of myself I am seventeen not three anymore.”

“Milissa I promised your brother that I would.”

“Luke I know that you promised him but my brother is not here anymore and I am sure that he would not want you to keep me locked up like a slave”

“I did not know that you felt that way. I will let you be more independent now but you still need to be my partner and you need to report back to me on every hour.”

Milissa smiled and through her arms around Luke. “oh thank you Luke I will report back to you every hour. I promise.”

“Ok lets go out and look for food before it becomes dark”

“Luke!”

“Hum?”

“Have you noticed how dark it has become lately?”

Luke scratched his head. “Well I have seen it become a bit dark but nothing that was to worry about.”

“Luke, it has gotten worse. Yesterday night I could not even see ten feet in front of me. Something is going on. This is not right.”

“Milissa don’t worry about it. It is probably just a faze and will  pass over.”

“Maybe it will pass over Luke and maybe it won’t pass over. Maybe this is a serious matter we have here.”

Luke stopped in his track and turned to Milissa. He looked stressed and he knew that Milissa was worried to death that this could be a huge problem. Looking at the sky Luke noticed that she was right to be concerned on this matter but Luke knew that the best thing for both of them is for him to keep calm and not show that he was scared. He needed to be strong for Milissa’s sake. He could not show her that he had any weakness in him because she trusted him and he could not let her down. Looking back down at Milissa Luke smiled and gave her a hug.

“Milissa it is ok this is a faze and it will pass over. Remember that week when it got darker and darker.”

“Yeah I do but what does that have to do with anything?”

“Well remember how everyone was freaking out and they all thought the world was ending”

She nodded

“It turned out to be a slow moving meteorite going between the earth and the sun. So this could be something like that so don’t worry.”

Milissa sighed and continued to walk with Luke. She did not know why she was so paranoid about this thing that could be nothing. She tried to ignore the fact that the skies were getting darker and darker but this feeling she had screamed DANGER! They had finally made it to the old supermarket where there was some food left. A couple shelves full of canned foods and a few meats left that had not gone bad yet. Milissa and Luke begun to gather what was needed. They grabbed the meat that was somewhat good. Some vegetables and snacks just for the heck of it.  Once they got the items that they need Milissa and Luke headed out of the store and back to camp.

They had about two sacks full of food, this should last every one for about a month if they ration it correctly.  The walk back to the town hall was a quiet and awkward one between Luke and Milissa. Milissa knew that Luke did not want to talk right now. He was to worried about the Rut and in the dark when you can’t see all that well the Rut loves to kill. The look on Luke’s face said that he knew something was not right, Milissa could tell he was getting uneasy. To calm him down Milissa rapped an arm around him and whispered in his ear.

“It is ok the Rut are no where near here.”

Luke turned to her. “How do you know that Milissa, We can’t even see a foot in front of us.”

Milissa smiled and hugged Luke “I have incredible hearing, and besides the Rut may be quiet but not even they can be extremely silent. Everything makes a sound when they walk.”

Luke shook his head as they continued to walk. Each step they took was shaky and with the random holes that are in the street they need to be careful so they don’t fall in one of them. Once Luke and Milissa made to the City Hall Luke let out a sigh of relief. Taking a step inside Luke and Milissa were greeted by Kyle.

“Oh good you guys are back I hope you found quite a bit of food.”

Luke nodded “Oh yes we filled up two sack full of food.”

“Yeah Kyle we even found thirty two steaks that did not go bad yet isn’t that great!” Milissa said with delight.

Kyle nodded “Yes that is good we all could use a good steak.”

By the look on Kyle’s face Luke and Milissa knew that they did a great job on finding food. Even though Luke and Milissa was not paying attention to Kyle when he spoke about the steak they still heard every word he had said. Turning to the door Milissa had this confused look on her face. Luke noticed that she was unease. Putting a hand on Milissa he gave her a look that read. Are you ok, what is wrong. The doors came flying open and Nikki came flying in, her eyes open with fright and she was panting like a dog.

“It…It…They…They..”

“Nikki What is it”

“Kyle.. The Rut….They have….Found us!”

Just after she said those words They have found us. The doors busted open and in no time the room was filled with thirty Ruts.

It could have used a little proof-reading. A comma was missing every now and then, and some words were misspelled. This seems interesting, but my attention kind of dozed off every now and then. You still haven't described how the Ruts look like, so I can't picture them very good. Detailing can use a little work and re-focusing. You should focus on how the Ruts and how the main characters look before going off to describe the background. Despite all that, a great write. Keep this up!
