An Eclipsed SongA Poem by Nici
Almost incomprehensible,
the little lark stutters, sputtering
mad notes, each one drowning
in useless agony, as the last song
sparks an inward frenzy, and the echoes
ravage the mouth of some endless well.
But where one burns out
the other follows, and follows quickly,
a resting lament of heartstrings
and Sunday morning songs—
a simple scream
that blazes out
in blur, just one cycle
in a tell-tale Universe
where we are all far from innocent,
ill as angels sick with curiosity,
hanging on to a space
made of eons and cold earth,
temptation and love, lost.
In the distance, the high-perched bird
swallows a single sound,
committing a brief pause
to gaze at some dancing spider web,
and at the last moment, leaning far too close,
unable to correct the error,
the lark fell,
lying in silence.
