Grass Under Your Heel

Grass Under Your Heel

A Poem by Blake Q Hatfield
"

I wrote this while listening to Nirvana "Sappy"

"
He truly loved you
Wanted to see you happy
He always tired his best
To avoid coming off so sweet and sappy
But as all the days went by
You used him up like a gullible patsy

He died, inside a winter, drunk off his a*s
Many call him disillusioned and quite crazy
Still held a flame without a candle or kindling
The smoke from the dead fire made his red eyes hazy
Praying to all the gods and prophets
That you'd return to him and be his gilded lady

What was in your heart, on your mind
When you tread upon his heart without apology
How could you be so bold, so cruel
As to make him seem so insignificant and tiny
He thought wrong, believed you to be majestic and true
Not knowing you had no concept of true sincerity

He was human grass laid before you to walk on
And you took full advantage of his heart's generosity
Leaving holes in his soul with empty gestures and promises
Of something he always hope would one day be a reality
But in the end he loved you
Perhaps the greatest tragedy
