Father's Day Cognac

Father's Day Cognac

A Poem by Blake Q Hatfield

I shall take a bit of my father's favorite drink to remember him
A bit more to never forget
I shall take another to say I'm sorry
For falling short in his shadow
And one more for the days I ever doubted his love

Until the bottle is empty
Until my mind is temporarily at ease
Father, how much I miss you
Even after all these year
How I wonder how it all could have been
As I sit here in remembrance

I miss all the days of youth
Before innocence was ripped away that eve
Carefree days with my true example of manhood
A true magi of chivalrous nature
A philosopher of the enjoyment of life
A prime example of noble sacrifice

I find myself wondering if it was just some nightmare
That you'll wake from your sleep and come home
To join me in a drink to share your wisdom
To smile and shine a light on this cold summer day
So I can honor the man you were
But it's just another childish dream that can never be

Old hero I shall drink strong to you today
Stand tall in honor of what you mean to me
One more sip for the courage to get through
One more to quicken this day away
And one more to the father I'll never forget
