Stuck on Yesterday

Stuck on Yesterday

A Poem by Blake Q Hatfield

The lonely one, he sits there on the bench
Thinking about the sweet yesterdays kept in memory
Watching the present go by so rapidly
And praying quietly that the future could become the past
He yearns for the comfort of yesterday

Mirrors are never friends of those hoping for old days
He can see the streaks of white and grey
No longer strong and sure as he was in his youth
He fights his mind to try and stop its longing song
Caught up in scenes, so many things reminding him
He longs for the sweet taste of the past
His heart calls out for memories

When he was a titan, when he was king
When he was capable of overcoming and conquering anything
He was so strong, so invulnerable, so wonderful
And the world was only joy and possibility
His heart felt so carefree
The zest of now was everything
His nostalgic eyes ache for old days

And when he sleeps, he fears his dreams
They show him everything he yearns to see
So sweet when the dreams is on
But bitter when he wakes in the dawn
To another day where he tries to hold on
To tender bits of what use to be
A soul lost in yesterday

So, many good lines in this poem. My favorites were the last two stances. This is so original in subject. Upon reading the title, I thought it would be about past hurt. You surprised me with old memories of the good old times. True to life sometimes instead of making a new destiny and new memories we wallow in old ones as if it will never be that good again. When I look back, I would have to say that people are what made those times special. Enjoyable read.
