Wondering Man

Wondering Man

A Poem by Blake Q Hatfield

Walking the tightrope
You could call friends from all sides
The universal man, the universal friend you are
But what does it matter when you're left alone

Woeful mind so out of touch
Time has lead you apart from the past
You long for all the things that linger
Of times when freedom was never a question
And you loved life so much

All the time slowly slipping away
Chances for something to rise and save your world
All you can do is ponder about what was
And what it felt like to be in love with the day
When you were surrounded by people who gave you hope
And helped you see the light of the stars

A bottle of gin at a time
On the lonely weekends to ease your mind
You know you are not whole
But the liquor makes you forget for moments
The elixir gives you a chance to let go
To pretend that you are in the arms of a former love

Notes so full of anger in your mind
Of the times you had to regret
When you believed in someone who was once a hero
That let pride and cowardice rule the day
A simple truth to save was all it would have took
But the downward spiral is already in play
With no apology that you long to hear

Self medication by the unconscious mind
It picks up the fork in the road
And takes in all the pain
A one point concentration of a quick and fleeting escape
Your mother says she taught you better
But she's a compulsive liar anyway
Too busy to see the truth hidden behind her clouded mind

The seasons pass and go on
You use to hope for a heroine
A friend or fantasy that would lead the way from this low
But as you grow more bitter and skeptic
You just wish for something better to occupy your time
Than trying to avoid the mirror reflecting your broken life

The universal man you once were is now a ghost
A champion of the past long stripped of his crown
Living the shadow of his regrets
You pray you'll find your telos in tomorrow
Even as you linger in your lovely yesterday
