The Mythos of Sadness

The Mythos of Sadness

A Poem by Blake Q Hatfield

He's through, He's done
With this life
Take two coins and close his eyes
He shall journey on the river Styx
A seeker journeyman hoping to find a paradise
A thought to distant in this life

Loneliness is the god of tricks
It causes the mind to be blind to hope
The simple pleasures loose their complexity
And too much is never enough

He feels likes Aires has waged war in his head
With Discord and Strife as his generals
No peace to be had for this overwhelmed mind
Who wishes for Aphrodite to send Cupid on an errand
To find the soul long detached from his

Love is the exposed Achilles heel
Protected and vulnerable
It is the thing we need to be complete
When it is skewered we are deeply wounded
And we are never the same again

He sits and sighs
Tired of his sullen contemplation
To be the hero, the champion
Something where love can be synthetic
But enough to get the ego through
Just to touch another's heart

For now the dream haunts
It's dormant and barely alive
Here he sits and sighs
Thinking of the time when he'll be
A journeyman upon the river Styx
With two coins to close his eyes

A very appealing mixture of mythology meeting dispair. A great write that is original and pensive. I especially like this stanza...

"Love is the exposed Achilles heel
Protected and vulnerable
It is the thing we need to be complete
When it is skewered we are deeply wounded
And we are never the same again"

You bring such a vivid story and feelings to mind with your words!

I love the stanza on love. It truely is an Achilles heal. Our biggest weakness. Yet, without it we are nothing.
I also like the way you wrap up the last stanza. good job.
