Tigger Blues

Tigger Blues

A Poem by Blake Q Hatfield
"

Inspired by my former roomates' cat, Tigger, constantly following me around the apartment for a week when my roomates left for a vacation. The big problem is I'm allergic, so it's difficult to interact with him because it causes a reaction, but I can't no

"

And I said
"Leave me alone"
You said
"You can't run from me forever"
And I said
"I just want some alone, some peace of mind
I can't give you any love
There's no more room in my heart
I don't even have enough for my friends
So much has been taken and stepped on
That I can no longer try"

You insisted I was wrong
And you told me
"You haven't tried hard enough
You haven't searched every bit of you heart
You just look at the hurt and pain that surrounds it
Take a look now with a less cautious eye
You just fear the heart ache
You're just afraid of someone exploiting you fear
But in doing so
You've just let them win"

And then I said
"Why can't you understand
It hard to try and reach out
When the world seems to bite your hand
And when every acquaintance seems to be a Brutus
Sometimes the lessons from the hurt is all you have"

But you knew this to be a bluff
I had nothing else to defend my xenophobic like way
And I took in what you said
But I still wanted my alone
Yet you wouldn't let it be
I guess I'll have to either break down or let you in
And then you said

"We all you need a friend or two
It's what helps make sense of this world
You gotta reach out and try
You can't let fear rule
Or your alone will be forever"

And I said
"You're right my friend
Come on in, there is room for another in my heart
I guess I need to take the risk
If I don't try I'll never know
I'll let go of fear and try
Thanks to you my friend"
