Editor's Letter to Virgina 2006

A Poem by Blake Q Hatfield
"

This is what I would imagine the whole Virginia writing to the Editor thing would go today with the way we tend to want to zap the life out of fantasy and imagination. I suggest listening to Tsunami "Could Have Been Christmas" while reading to g

"

I’m sorry Virginia
But there won’t be smiles for Christmas this year
Santa Claus is long dead
The news put a clog in his heart, a bullet in his head
But what killed him is what he read…

“Santa Claus is fairies and unicorns
Who needs them
The time of innocence is all a joke
Forge and let them choke
It’s only you, drown the rest”

Rudolf with his nose so bright
Tried to bring light to Santa’s day
But Old St. Nick was in a thick fog of hurt by what they said
He wondered if this generation was too jaded and gone to care
Even frosty tried to warm he heart
But nothing he did seemed to warm the chill of Santa’s soul

And then the news said
“Santa wasn’t possible these days
There’s no time for such a foolish display
So pull the plug and fast forward past the funeral
No last respects for this absent figment”

Santa tried to reason with himself
Hearts were once strong but they got old
They’ve become so hard and dark
You’d thought you could have found a diamond amongst the coal
Crabs in a barrel, not letting another rise
Not caring who lives, and laughing at those who die

And this was his end
He could take no more
His golden heart gave out
And he fell broken to the floor
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder, Blitzen
Rudolph, the elves and Mrs. Claus
They tried in vain to revive him
But Yukon Jack pulled them off and said…

“There’s nothing more we can do
Santa’s dead because of the cruel and unkind of the world
He tried to bring happiness to every boy and girl
But all he got in return was stone hard coal
He’s better off not living in this world”
So Virginia, this year Christmas is a funeral
Mourned by shopping at the mall
With a eulogy read by Visa and Master Card
There’s no Santa this year, they killed him off
Virginia I am deeply sorry,
There is no Santa Claus…

Blake this was an amazing write! You penned the cynicism of a sometime cold and unfeeling world so well.
From the very first stanza, your poem held my attention right through to the last superb few lines...
