Chapter 2: What Happened at the PartyA Chapter by BlakeChapter Two What Happened at the Party
"I found your pills on the table, Ritch," said Ritch's mother as he plundered through the refridgerator. He looked around the fridge's door at his mother. "I forgot to take them. I'm sorry," he said. He brought out the carton of milk and went to the cabinet to his right. "How many times did it happen today?" she asked him. Ritch knew she meant how many times did he switch personalities. He got out the box of cereal and set both the box and the carton of milk by the sink. "Four times," he told her as he got out a bowl to pour the cereal in. "I can't keep reminding you to take your meds, Ritch. I have enough to do with my job and my job as a mother. It is your responsibility to do these things. I won't be around to look after you forever." After Ritch had made the cereal and put the carton of milk and box of cereal back in their places, he was given some pills by his mother. He tossed them in his mouth and with a tilt of his head he swallowed them. He grabbed the bowl of cereal and headed into the living room. He sat down on the worn out couch and began flipping through channels on the TV. "Don't you have a party to go to tonight?" his mother asked. "Yeah. It starts in about an hour and thirty minutes. I have time to watch my show," he said with a mouthfull of cereal. "You have time to finish your snack and take out the garbage. Then come help me with the laundry. I can't do everything by myself," she said as she bent over to grab a pile of folded laundry. "No point in arguing," Ritch thought. "She always wins those."
. . .
Zach sat at the sewing machine creating new outfits for him and his boyfriend. He was very talented at sewing, but the things he sewed were, however, very distasteful for anyone who actually wants to look good. He was currently finishing up a leather outfit for himself. Sketches of the outfit were scattered across his desk and bed. When he was satisfied with the outfit, he held it up and took a long look at it. He searched for any flaws in it, when really the entire costume would be considered a flaw by anyone in their right mind. He put it on a clothes hanger and hung it up with his other outfits. He then took out the costumes he created for him and Meko. He had only seen Meko in the costume once, and he liked what he saw. The costumes were made mostly out of black and purple leather. They showed too much skin even for a girl to be wearing, much less a guy. When he was done examining the outfits, he went into his bathroom and grabbed a bottle of gel off the counter by the sink. After squirting some in the palm of his hand, he began to run his fingers through his hair to make it spike out. He looked in his mirror, satisfied with his hair, and noticed a few blemishes on his face. Nothing a little make-up couldn't handle...
. . .
Ritch, after finishing his chores his mother had given him, sat down at his small keyboard in his room. Some people, who have not experienced all of his personalities, would tell you Ritch could not play the piano. That is true for every other one of his personalities, except for the one he was experiencing then. He was reserved and it didn't want to be around anyone at the time. But what was best about this personality was, as if he had been practicing it for years, he could play the piano. Some doctors would try telling you that what Ritch had was more than multiple personality disorder. He had a change in talents with every personality. In one, he was a great athlete, in another he would write poems and stories to himself, some of which his mother found lying around, and in another, of course, he could play the piano brilliantly. With no music book before him, he began to play Fur Elise. He closed his eyes, as he always did when he played the piano. His fingers ran across the keys on the piano freely and without hesitation. He had only played this song three times before. His only practice for the song was hearing his mother play it once. His mother came to the door to his room behind him to watch him play. She leaned against the door with her arms crossed as she smiled at him. When he was done, and he opened his eyes, as if he had no idea where he was, she began to clap her hands. He spun around in the chair with an expression of shock on his face. "I'm late," he said.
. . .
Selina Tess's house was one of the largest in the whole city, even though the city contained more trees and run-down houses than buildings. There were dozens of cars outside of her house, all coming for another one of her famous parties. Inside, the many people, dressed in costumes such as witches, vampires, mummies, zombies, ghosts, school girls, and many others, got in the gangs they usually were in at school. Selina and her boyfriend, Terry Vac, Megan McLennon, one of Megan's friends, and a few of Terry's friends were all part of one of the most popular groups in the school. The music, which would soon be turned all the way up and have the many people dancing to the song, played softly at the moment. "Don't worry, Megan. He'll be here soon," said Selina, who was dressed as a girl who had rose from the dead. She had blood on her face, white make-up to make her skin look pale, and wore a tattered black dress. "He's not answering any of my texts though," said Megan as she made another text to Ritch. Megan was dressed as a cat, which included nothing more than cat ears, gloves in the form of cat paws with sparkling claws, a long black tail, and a black nose and whiskers drawn onto her face for a costume. "Why don't you try calling him?" said Terry. His friend by him laughed and gave him a high-five. Terry nor his friends were dressed in anything. They were too cool for that, of course. "When are we gonna start the party for real, Selina? I'm so ready," said Megan's friend. "Sorry, Meg," said Selina, "but I do have to start the party soon. I can't hold it off just for Ritch." "I know, I know," said Megan.
. . .
"Oh my God. Come on you stupid thing. Come on!" Ritch shook his phone again, as if shaking it and punching it would help. "That's what you get for taking your phone to school. You shouldn't have even left it in your pants. I'm not going to search your pockets every time I put clothes in the washing machine. Lesson learned," said his mother. Ritch knew better than to talk back, especially when he planned on going to the party. He got in his mom's car and backed out of the dirt drive way. She waved him goodbye and made a motion with her hands that signified to buckle up. He did so, but he did not wave back to her.
. . .
Selina stood at the microphone they would soon be using to sing with. She told them what they would start off doing to what the party would end with. When she was done, she walked over to the kareoke machine and played the song she wanted. "Here is Victoria Edwards singing for all of your entertainment, Hot N' Cold by Katy Perry," Selina said at the microphone. Victoria said a few opening words to the crowd and then began to sing. Megan watched her impatiently, waiting on- "I've heard of having a frog in your throat, but she sounds like she has a dying hippo in her's," said a voice from behind her. She knew who it was without looking. She turned around, trying to keep her smile hidden so she could look as angry as possible, to Ritch. "Where were you? I texted you a million times! Why didn't you answer?" she said. "My phone got lost in the land of Spinning Waters. And, you know, water and phones don't mix." "Ritch, I'm being serious." "So am I. It got soaked in the washing machine." About this time the horrid singer quit singing and the song faded away. Selina went back to the microphone and announced their next song. She waved at Megan, and Megan went over to her. They whispered to each other and then Selina said into the microphone,"The beautiful hostess of this party and my friend Megan McLennon will sing Poker Face by Lady Gaga. Our back-up singers will include Terry Vac and Ritch Simmons!" The crowd seemed as shock as Terry and Ritch, but they still applauded for them. Terry and Ritch began to protest, but eventually their girlfriends got the better of them. "Just read the words off the screen. There aren't that many. Please do it? It will be so much fun and everyone will enjoy it. Pweeease," said Selina. And so they agreed reluctantly to do it. Two more microphones were brought out onto the floor. Both boys went to a different microphone and waited on the words. The song started, and they began.
. . .
Zach went to Meko's house so he could take him to Selina's party, and also give him the costume he would where at the party. As they left the house and headed for the car, the next door neighbor looked over and saw them. "What the hell?" he said. Neither Zach nor Meko heard the man. They backed out of the driveway, Zach driving, and headed to the party.
When they arrived at the party and stepped out of the car, the people instantly began pointing and whispering. This was something Zach could ignore, but Meko, however, scanned nervously across the crowd of people, looking at their crazed expressions. "Relax," Zach said. He grabbed Meko's hand and they walked to the front door together. Zach rang the door bell and Selina's mother opened the door. "Hey!" she began, but then froze when she saw the costumes."W-welcome to Selina's Halloween party! Come on in." The two boys entered the house only to find themselves being stared at by everyone nearby. Meko felt a sudden wave of embarrassment. As if Zach could feel through the palm of Meko's hand how he was feeling, Zach once again told him, "Relax." It wasn't the pointing and whispering, like it usually was, that made Meko uneasy. It was the eerie silence of them all. But as they walked down the path the crowd had created for them as they moved along towards Selina, the pointing and whispering followed behind them, like a shadow. Following them everywhere they went. When Selina caught sight of them she smiled and greeted them. "Hey, guys! I'm so glad you two could make it!" she said. "Wouldn't have missed it," said Zach, grinning back at her. Meko, however, was not looking at Selina, but at Terry Vac. Terry was not laughing, nor was his friend next to him. They seemed to stunned to even make fun of them, which only increased the embarrassment for Meko. Selina turned to Megan and said, "Don't worry, Megan. He'll be here soon." "He's not answering any of my texts though," said Megan, frantically texting something on her phone. Terry seemed to have nothing to say about the two boys, so he turned away from them and told Megan, "Why don't you try calling him?" Terry's friend laughed and gave him a high-five. "See?" Zach whispered to Meko, "Even Terry Vac is not saying anything about us.You need to stop worrying so much. They feed off of your worrying. Stop worrying, and they stop the bullying." A girl Zach nor Meko knew asked Selina when the 'real' party was going to start. It wasn't long after the party did start. After Selina went up to the microphone and gave the list of things they would be doing in order, a girl went up to the microphone and began singing a familiar song to Zach. After a few others began to dance, Zach took Meko's hand and said, "Come on! Let's dance!"
. . .
As Megan and Selina sang, and Terry and Ritch sang the low notes in the background in union, everyone began dancing. Terry looked over at Ritch and rolled his eyes as he sang. Ritch was surprised Terry even acknowledged him. He smiled at him and kept singing. As the disco ball twirled, creating the many different colors of light circling crazily around the room, Ritch began making a few dance moves he had seen off of a Michael Jackson video. When the crowd saw this, they all began laughing and cheering him on. Lucas Harrison came out of the crowd and joined Ritch in the dance moves. Megan then joined them, and Selina persuaded Terry to do it with her, too. Lucas tried doing the moonwalk, but ended up making a fool of himself. Ritch tried doing the gravity-defying lean Michael Jackson could do. When he did, he stumbled and fell on his stomach. Another roar of laughter, just what Ritch was hoping for. As Ritch got back on his feet, he noticed two others dancing in the circle the crowd had created for them. They danced so close together that their skin rubbed against each other. What caught everyone's attention was who these two were. They were Zach and Meko. As everyone began noticing them and stopped dancing, the two kissed each other, still dancing. The kiss lasted for about ten seconds. Suddenly, Terry Vac rushed over to them and shoved them both to the ground. "Get your gay asses out of here!" he yelled at them. They quickly got back on their feet, holding hands. "Terry! Terry calm down!" Selina told him as she stood in front of him with her hands on his shoulders. Meko and Zach broke through the crowd, making their way for the door. They looked over their shoulder several times to make sure Terry or one of his friends weren't after them. "Why'd you do that Terry?! This is my party, so stop ruining everything!" Selina told him. "Did you see what they were doing?! Th-" Terry started. "You could've just asked them to stop!" Selina's father came into the room. The fun of the party ended there.
. . .
It was midnight, just a few hours after the party ended. Ritch lied in bed unable to sleep. He tried closing his eyes and thinking of things that may send him into a dream. He turned his pillow over to feel the cold side, but after he had done this a numerous amount of times, both sides were evenly warm. He stuck one leg out from under the covers, trying to get a cool sensation. Nothing worked. He was sweating so much his shirt stuck to his skin. His hair was stuck to his forehead, dripping sweat. He rubbed the sweat from the eyes, when suddenly he felt a sharp pain in his left leg. He quickly grabbed his leg and began yelling in pain. It felt as if someone was drilling through his calf muscle nonstop. He squeezed it and yelled for his mother to help him. Trying to get out of bed, he fell to the floor. His mother came into his room, knelt down beside him, and shoved some pills into his mouth. After he swallowed them, the pain lessened, and slowly faded away. Afterwards, he slowly drifted off into a sleep. He looked up to see his mother hovering over him as his eyes slowly closed.
. . .
He slowly made his way to the kitchen, tears still streaming from his eyes. He had spent many hours contemplating over his life. He finally decided it was not a life worth living. After sending a farewell text to his boyfriend, he opened the droor in the kitchen, which contained the eating utensils. He reached within it and pulled out the largest knife he could find. He held it in front of his face, the moonlight streaming through the window reflecting off the blade. He placed the tip of the blade beneath his left ear, and with a quick movement of his hand, he sliced his throat. Blood splashed against the kitchen's cabinets, counters, and floor. Meko fell to the ground and lied in his own puddle of blood, the butcher knife still in his hand.
