The Beast Broke FreeA Poem by LovecraftA mans dark nature overwhelms him.
The Beast within me has broken its shackles,
To the cage in which I imprisoned it long ago. I loathed that She had not noticed it happen, Her whom see's the best in me but not the worst. I loved her but the Beast made fools of us both, Baring its teeth in reckless abandon, ferocity, Now unchained. Selfishness and Love caused me to stay beside Her, Resulting in the death of the Woman I held most precious. The eyes of the Beast glow a fiery crimson, Ready to pounce on that which provokes it. In a fit of overwhelming rage I strangled her, Seeing her eyes, the confusion and hurt there, And finally witnessing the Light go out of those Eyes I had always Loved in the past, emerald green. Laying beside her still body I wept for hours, Gazing into her lifeless green orbs as though, As though maybe she wasn't really dead, That I hadn't killed her for reasons I did not Comprehend. Sleep eventually took me to a better place, Replacing my horror with happiness, Where I was fortunate to see her again, This time alive and happy with me.
