I Live...

I Live...

A Story by Amberlynn Kaye

I found myself walking in an unknown place with scrambled thoughts and no destination in mind. The road ahead of me is long and narrow and my head is held down with sorrow in my eyes. There is nothing that I see. The darkness long closed around me like a shadow lost in its one reflection and I walk. I continue to walk, unaware of where I am going, unseeing to where I will end up.

My breath is slow and my heart, that should be beating in a regular rhythm, is playing its own tune of despair. Beating slowly, afraid and fragile. A heavy heart.

"Damion!" A voice reaches into my thoughts and I stop walking. I stop.

I didn't raise my head. I didn't move. I wasn't surprised or even aware that there was someone shouting my name but then it was a whisper.

"Damion...."

I clench my eyes shut because this voice doesn't belong in this world. In my world that is full of black and hatred. This voice was sweet and held so much emotion that it could crumble even the mightiest of nightmares, only this wasn't a nightmare. This was real. Me, in my own pain. Swallowed by the very world I was brought into and left to a fight surely losing.

I started to move. My legs held in place to long and I continued forward with the voice still pleading my name in that same emotional distress but why was it so sad? What was the reason for its voice to crack in that same way that a death brought on tears of loss?

"I love you...."

My body froze. My thoughts cut off by the sincerity of those three words and for the first time my head raised and my eyes fluttered before opening. With lack of use I blinked and there was darkness but there was a light so strong, so beautiful growing ahead of me and it shined brighter as it filled the darkness that surrounded me with the most precious of gifts. True light.

I saw her, before she even fully walked out of the light and towards me. A women that wore white and had beautiful long blonde hair. Her eyes were a reflection of sapphire and life itself as she came to stand in front of me. Her gaze so intense, so determined though they were that of love and understanding as she placed her hand to my cheek in a simple gesture.

"Who....who are you." My voice was strained.

She smiled. "Because you live, that is why I am here. In front of you. Your a lost soul that has tortured itself far to much." Her voice was gentle and caring and I realized that it was her voice that came to me before.

I leaned into her touch. The warmth that was sent through my skin was that of an angel. "I don't deserve life. I am tainted. I am damaged and I don't......." My voice shook with so much force.

"Ssh. Life is for everyone. The challenges that we face make us who are. We often forget that there are people that love us so much that our own pain becomes a part of them to. Because we live, they live." She removed her hand and I felt the loss of contact was to soon.

"I live...." I whispered.

"You live."

I felt myself falling back. My body was to heavy. It felt like a thousand pounds had trapped itself over me to keep my body still, unmoving but I didn't hit the ground. I continued to fall past the barrier and away from her as she watched me continue to fall. Her eyes lock on mine as she moved her lips but I couldn't hear her words but could make out what they were.

"I love you, Damion. You have to live."

I could no longer hold my eyes open and her image disappeared behind closed lids as I drifted farther back in my own subconscious but the light was still there. I couldn't see it but I could feel it. Through her.
