A Wolf Protects Its Own

A Wolf Protects Its Own

A Story by Amberlynn Kaye

The darkness surround's everything. Small amount of moon light flashes within the trees and illuminates' from puddles in the ground.

The wind blows with a haunted sound yet the night is dead quiet except the howling of creatures who blend so smoothly into the dark clearing of the woods.

Creatures that creep in the shadows so quietly not a twig even snaps. One who knows how to stalk its prey and remains hidden from unwanted guests.

Creature without fear but admired bravery. Looking into its eyes as it strolled from the clearing and now walked towards me. It's eyes glowing and its teeth bared as we locked eyes. Connected yet completely different. It stared at me. Translating with a language unheard yet perfectly clear.

"Who are you?"

My eyes widened at the voice I heard, not out loud, no it was in my mind. Confusion in my features at what the creature asked. It tilted its head, studying me with intensity.

"I can smell it. The pure heart of a lost soul." It closed its eyes for a mile second before opening them. Only it wasn't the yellow orbs looking back at me but a crystal blue like my own.

I backed away. Not out of fear but because those same blue eyes were similar to my very own. With each step back, it took a step forward. I backed up only stopping when my back hit a solid tree.

The wolf was right in front of me. "You are one of us Kira."

I didn't have time to think upon its words before I was hit such a profound pain it had me doubling over and clutching my stomach. My screams were carried through the night. I could feel my body tremble and my bones break only to rearrange in a different angle. I didn't notice when my screams had turned into whimpers.

The pain vanished and I was laying on the ground panting. My hands were no longer mine. They were paws. One of a wolf and my body was now covered in fur. I looked up at the wolf who still stared at me. Who bent down to lick my face. "You are our protector."

It's eyes glowed with such a beautiful blue that I felt my own doing the same. My heart beat wildly in my chest and I knew. Knew that it was my place to be the savior and so I stood. More independent than ever before and my reply was simple.

"I am Kira and I will protect my pack."
