The Anatomy Lesson

The Anatomy Lesson

A Poem by Laura Lynn

All of a sudden, the telephone rang
Calling the police terrified me
Convincing myself I ought to go uptown
Instantly my life as I then knew it was over
Driving me to a diner downtown
Eating and crying impossible
Names and nail polish
The city would be stepping in
A crackle of panic rising in my voice
The word made my stomach crawl
Overwhelmed how fast things were spinning
Reasonable expressions that made me frantic
Out of control
Upper Sixties, one of the great old white-glove buildings
Glazed chintz and Chinese jars
Heads turned wherever Mrs Barbour went
