Pretty, gray mocking jay, your acceptance
was all Darwin needed.Your closest
living relative, not polyglot but cunning
thrasher, a controversy for his evolution,
his contested theory of transmutation.
Did he study his words with the tortoises,
or would he not prefer your amphibious
repetition? Neither thrasher nor trembler,
yet a four-toed passerine and truly songful,
your voice captivates like the sirens. Insects
hardly see you coming. When you are old,
still the raven cannot sing so many numbers.
Your repertoire far surpasses even the eagle.
I felt the strength of the words here, yet I wanted to offer another intepretation as I always try to show different angles. To be oneself requires desire, most are unaware and hence remain at the level of instinctiveness. Where all the anger, need to belittle, and all the basic, grounded and heavy matter of life resides. Birds to the best of my knowledge can't exceed their own creation but in our case isn't that exactly what we should be striving for?
On a by the way, The Raven will stil be looking and waiting even when the eagle manages indeed to break the sound barrier. How often do we see an eagle expectantly observing?
Wow, a piece that points out the reality that this intriguing bird encompasses all that evolution might suggest, yet it is only a bird, and that one bird, yet a magnificent fowl of a creature ... Well done ...
Blown away by the great writing and observations you have made Laura. I love birds and listen to their voices, rarely seeing the mocking birds here - so smart like your words. My brain a flurry, you have made a great point here and Darwin didn't get it with this beauty and talented creature and probably so many other things. So much to think of...Loved it and thank you.
I have no idea how you think of so much to write about a bird.
Though it was beautiful, and captivating, this poem sounded really poetic.
Brilliant little write Lynn :)
Hi Laura - i read that locally Jays are declining because they are imitating the sounds of the so-called smart phones ringtones and apparently the females prefer the golden oldies - the males are sacrificing all for a new sound. Wonder what Darwin would have made of that.
Thanks for stirring the thought-pot today Laura
:)

the mockingbirds in life seem to survive too, those who make fun of others, mimic others, play with others words, not his own...but somehow his life which is built on others survives...
yes, allegorical here, much like people.
I like writing. I don't know what else to say. This has been a great website to share works in progress, some which I have abandoned some which I loose to myself and enjoy writing most of all. It'.. more..
