My understanding is the term Indian summer come from seafarers who would take advantage of calm weather of the fall in the Indian Ocean. But this fine write suggests another origin. Would love some author notes.

you are correct Pryde, sorry I was reading the Langenscheidt Italian-Eng dictionary, it's an incorrect translation and must cause some confusion but the summer of St. Martin must be a type of comparable weather, still it could cause some confusion in our conception of what it means to be Indian or native americans, the north americans, there seems to be a lot of confusion about it now
