Dream CourageA Poem by WynterPhoenixThank you Courtney Moise for the title =]Basketball injury, possible ankle fracture? The doctor says it’s rare. Angiosarcoma. Chemo and radiation will not work, there’s no remedy. Thirty tumors in a lower extremity, the only option we have, amputation below the knee. “Why me? I’m only sixteen.” Feeling sorry for myself, I remember her. My beloved grandmother, an amputee with hope. “God, I’ll be as strong as her. I’ll give up my leg if it means I keep my life.” After surgery was painful, phantom pain torture. Up on crutches soon enough, next step prosthesis. Physical therapy recited, “One to two and a half months before you lose your crutches.” God has given me hope, I smile, then reply, “I’ll be walking in two weeks.” Half a week off on my prediction, the therapist offers “Let’s shoot a round.” Basketball dribble, nothing but net, “I’m still the same person, no matter how hard it gets.” With that I found courage, Paralympic visitation. Soon after, I was jogging. I felt like I was flying. Never giving up, I went for my dreams. Nationals training, qualifying World Championships. Making it to semi-finals, though I lost, I was happy. I’m not giving up my dream, again I will compete. No longer feeling sorry, I’ve got all the support and help. Parents, coaches, and friends are teaching, “If you look for something good to come from something bad, you’ll find it every time.” © 2011 WynterPhoenixAuthor's Note
