The Emphatic Norm

The Emphatic Norm

Not so well understood and yet a critical factor,
Known for its significance only when lost,
The standards set by our social behavior,
Is a primary aspect of the way we relate to another,
It is also the basis with which we understand.
That stable rock of our passions, to measure by,
It is the middle, the center and the all important average,
The proverbial experience that cultivated proverbs,
Words of wisdom handed down over the ages,
Which came to form a rhythm, to ring of the true,
That helped our societies identify with ourselves.
On occasion it became the millstone round the neck,
A little passe, stereotypical, cliché in its application,
Which brings out the brickbats with the usual complaints,
That we need to change, move forward, kick a*s,
By people who really should refine their arts further .
Change, when we truly realize it, comes from the center,
For change cannot be undertaken without stability,
To measure effectively such changes that we need.
To clamor for the the neo and cutting edge is sexy stuff,
And sexiness is measured from that which is not,
Just normal perhaps, a jack-of-all-trades, a householder,
Essentially a human experience that views all such,
That man relaxing on the sofa in the living room,
And realizes the part that he plays as the reference,
For any and all plays that take place in society,
As much for the bards of old who rewrote religion,
And certainly, for the way we move forward confidently.
