The Circus

The Circus

It was a great act from the beginning,

Man and beasts coming together to entertain,

I wondered about how the animals were trained,

How they brought themselves to understand

The man trainer's voice, words and gestures,

Certainly it was done with some prodding,

And with some implied threat of injury,

If they didn't respond to the guides given.

I was nine years old and it was my first time.

Many years later I read about how animals

Trained man to think around 10,000 bc.

It was a great relationship between the two,

On issues of family, society and survival issues.

It had one drawback. In encountering something unknown,

Animals get spooked and they transfered that to man.

We are adding to our knowledge of things today,

But once in a while something happens we can't explain,

We get spooked. But in knowing it, half the battle is won.

The point might be to see if we respond to an implied injury,

It may be a neccessary condition in the anima part of us,

That we will never overcome. It is what makes us human.

Animals can teach us; their natures show us what we might be.
