Delusional Identities

Delusional Identities

A Poem by Shin ( formerly known as ) Bidayah

I remember meeting an Eastern European once,

Who bemoaned that the west was getting decadent.

When asked for a specific comment, he said this,

People in capitalist systems are into individual identities,

And such identitites are entirely false and delusional.

He had spoken from his socialist background and life,

He was, I think, simply repeating what he had heard.

When I replied that its a way of life that exalts beauty,

Through which we experience the world and self,

His only response was to shake his head and smile.

I would have dismissed the comment without thought,

But this was in a UN meeting in the Hague, Netherlands.

It occured to me that people are different, its true,

They speak from their own experiences and lifestyle,

I think I resolved then that I was going to work harder,

To understand the differences that we are as family.

The Eastern European today enjoys an identity like others.

It was also a tale of two cities and we are growing daily.

We are one world..With differing views now all we need is understanding or we may just self-destruct.

There is something to be said for socialism, but more to be said for capitalism. We must all grow together.
