The Idleness of YouthA Poem by Shin ( formerly known as ) Bidayah
In my youth, I heard a story about a frontiersman who killed a bear,
Was astounding because they said, he did it alone and with just a knife,
Bidayah believed it and told that story to his friends in the village,
Eventually Bidayah looked up to the man and wanted to be like him,
Which I thought was okay. Its a great stimulation on the impulses,
But something happened later, which cast doubt on the story,
It not only made the story look like a lie, but everything I had grown into.
We moped around for a while, had deep regrets but kept the nose going.
Was under medication a bit, my personality was diagnosed as self destructive.
When I got older, I looked at it again and figured a man could have done it,
Where he was big and strong, the knife sharp, created a focus and was lucky.
Then I realized it wasn't it at all. It was us moving away from Ursa Major,
That's the great bear in the sky that has grown into a symbol of sloth,
It led me to an active nature of engaging the mind to create new possibilities,
Instead of continuing with the way a person might just expect things to happen.
And there was more. It pointed to the possibilities of achievement of one man,
Where that might apply to a great many things that we undertake in life,
It influenced my career where I did some things people never thought possible.
Then Bidayah returned after having broken our relationship for twenty years.
There's a part of me today that believes that the story might actually be true.
Maybe the word believe is a very mysterious word. I'll be looking at it again.
