The Gladiator*

The Gladiator*

A Poem by Shin ( formerly known as ) Bidayah

The gladiator's intention is to die,

In the ring, fighting,

For courage must be at hand,

While he is surviving,

The angels who come for him will cry,

Their voices singing,

Spare this bravado, Lord, he's cathartic,

Simply sublime and ravishing.

* Adapted from a Benedictine poem, 13th century AD.

Gladiators had to be very brave, t=but I'm glad this barbarism is long behind us.
