My Unwanted Child

A poem by Alejandro Manuel Espinoza

Must a mother love her unwanted child?

Would you let me fool you as I would?

Would you believe me if I said I loved you, then smiled?

As my life drowns, so do you in unknown tears that should

Be known to me

But I let them continue to evade me

Looking into your eyes, my unwanted child

I see a maelstrom

Of something that goes beyond what I can give

To you, my unwanted child, my sudden storm

Deep is the fear within me

When I tell you I love you

Knowing that it is a lie

I feel the same feeling as when I birthed you

What is tangible is what I can offer to you

But is it love that you want?

My unwanted child,

I can never…

I can never connect that to you

Sleep now, my unwanted child

I will close the door

The sickness will pass soon

Then,

The only tie that binds us will be no more

Shh…

Don’t cry…

Goodbye…
