A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

Thinking of the future

"

The Café is airy with quite a few windows

outside it is very green and pleasing to view

I sit at a small table, fitted out with proper flatware

the menu is substantial with many choices

what draws my attention is  a cheese and tomato sandwich, a slice of apple pie and a cup of hot tea

I glimpse around the place and the waitresses appear so young, yet quite capable

My food arrives rather promptly

whilst I take my first bite

my baby seems to move a bit

perhaps he knows that I am hungry and

in a sense nourishing him as well

I smile, rather relaxed now

It seems that when I try to unwind

my mind arouses and, like a blender

it spins around with so many notions

some that must be taken seriously

one, is to determine whether to stay in London

and continue to see my doctor here

deliver the baby here

yet, why would I prefer that?

I can only imagine that my soldier

remains in hospital with a questionable

date of release

otherwise, I have not a friend here

The thought of traveling on another ship crossing

compels me to feel ill

one crossing was plenty, with mixed emotions as well

oh, I do pray that my soldier withdraws from his amnesia

and can meet me in London, acknowledging my presence

where we can settle with our baby in a lovely flat

perhaps across from a small park

and can fancy the gardens in spring

I know you perceive this as a fairy tale considering

all  the sorrow that has befallen me recently

yet I have come to believe there is hope

thanks Thomas for your continued support!
warmly, B😊
If we didn't have hope, where would we be?
Fast forwarding to today from when your story is set will give you a pretty good idea methinks.
Which also leads me to another point. I was always amazed by my parents generation and older that through all the blitz of wartime and rationing here, which meant my mum didn't even so much as see a banana until her late 20's, as well as her being relocated to Ireland to live on a farm, where she thought the eggs were gross because she seemed to be the only person in history that preferred the powdered eggs abomination over the more natural type, they still went on and on about wartime being the best time of their lives, where you could always leave your door open.
The way they went on about it I think they were actually sad when war ended and the "all in it together" mantra ended. But again, looking at today I can see their point more and more!

I enjoyed this read, Betty. I recently made a comment about how the enigma of life is its endless possibilities available in choice. Our most important decisions can be based on Love, Hate, or indifference. The better choice often reflects our better angels, and in essence our profound need for hope. Your eloquent write speaks to that most humanly virtue. CLE

A plethora of eagerness and hope, written so well and inviting the reader to share in this very important reunion! The time in which you've told the tale is gently obvious, nothing seems out of place, in fact the obvious. Can only wish the 'heroine' has a wonderful future before her. Many thanks for sharing, Betty.
