THE WILD BRAIN

THE WILD BRAIN

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

what it can do PROMPT: RAVIN INK Group "The Wild"

"

She is brilliant, active, creative, imaginative, opinionated

pretty

she loves conversation and can hold her own when it comes to literature, social issues, history

an activist for women, trans, the under-served

the homeless

that said, she shatters, under a spell of ghostly shadows

she can be in the cosmos in a split second

can purchase a piece of land in minutes

and buy a Mercedes upon a viewing

Neighbors despise her

in her most frenetic state of mind

she knocks on doors in wee hours of the morning

cannot sleep

counts pills to help

an hour or two of light slumber

more drugs

groggy, walks like a drunk

days of the wild mind

she believes she knows it all

Then it halts

back to her routine self

she sleeps, judges well

does not speed

speech not slurred

no more knocks at 2:00AM

she is mellow, knows she is back to earth

not of her own will, perhaps sad

thank you Julie, a lovely review, hope all is well!🌷
Warmly, B😊
This poem highlights themes of brilliance and chaos, activism and isolation, and the cyclical nature of her highs and lows. Ultimately, it reflects on the fragility of mental health and the societal perceptions that accompany it.

A very well written, short yet meaningful one.
Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome
Betty,
Sometimes I think of that belt of asteroids between mars ands Jupiter... millions of them, each with it's own history, none of them able to tell... Not that different from her wild brain bouncing off her neighbors who are also inflicted with similar ravings. Your poem is a loose biography of each of us, plowing through space and time, ricochetting from one crisis to the next, then floating alone in the cosmos with only ourselves to contemplate what it all means. But what I love most is this reminder of those days when my friends would gather at our favorite Nashville cigar bar and discuss your subject and a thousand others over tobacco and craft beers...

HI Vol, a very informative and personal review!
Thank you for the PROMPT!
Warmly, B
Such sadness within your powerful, superbly set poem, Betty. There are people wearing this cloak, one.. two.. maybe more, locked in one body... mind exclusive, thoughts tied in knots or flying space. You have sensed, perhaps seen or closely known this troubled being, part of society, part often condemned as 'odd' Can't say more having read three times. YOU are more than a writer.. you are an empathic pointing finger who says, this could be you.

Hi Betty, sounds to me like you've described, so grippingly and eloquently, bi-polar. I guess we all know someone who suffers from it, going on and off their meds, poor souls.

You describe this condition accurately with great poetic personification.
It is widely prevalent as you are widely popular.
