HIGH HEELS

HIGH HEELS

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

A star is born....

"

Once upon a time

I was a shoe model at ten years old

hard to believe, yet true

It all commenced when my grandfather started

manufacturing shoes in the 1930’s and again after

world War Two

high fashion women’s shoes

costly yet stunning

leather, suede, alligator, sequins, gold trim

high heels, low heels, thick heels, thin heels

One day, a photographer came to the shoe store

to photograph my older sister and I wearing women’s high heel shoes

we put on our finest and laughed as we stepped into giant shoes

way too big for us

he then enlarged the black and white photo

and installed it in the window

voila! We were the talk of the town

on West 57th street in Manhattan

Sometimes after school  I would take the public bus to the store

where my grandfather stood in the rear, arms crossed, blank face

yet when he saw me running to greet him, his face lit up

“You are a star, you know,” he said

I said “not really”

A wonderful story shared. Nothing as wonderful as a old memory that can make you smile. A woman in high heels and confident, nothing so beautiful. Thank you dear Betty for sharing the amazing tale. I did enjoy.
