THIS BENCH

THIS BENCH

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

a future?

"

Still, I remain on this bench

perhaps it is a foreboding of  the near present

so many decisions to assemble

in a foreign land

where I am a stranger to everyone

including my dear soldier

whether to remain in England

that the possibility of  his amnesia  pikes out

and he recognizes me in my present state

all these notions need attention  straightaway

This bench means a lot to me

it is my salvation from the horrors of my foolish visit

to the gentleman

when I could  run  away no more

my legs stripped from under me

I  sat for hours collecting myself

as you well know my predicament

yet is has some value, some respite, some memories

that is why I have  this bench from which to

take flight to a new adventure if I please

Though, first I would like to unwrap this blanket from my body which shrouds me and my mind together

during my initial shock

in addition, it will release the tension that envelops me

I fold it and lay it next to me

now I can breathe and view my life before me more clearly

Foremost, I touch my baby and sing to him while

he peacefully sleeps

he must be tired with all the kicking this morning

I yawn and peek at the sun, then remind him that I love him very much

I lift off the bench and walk through a lovely park

contemplative. i too have favorite benches that i frequent to unwind and think things through. although calming and restful there is a subtle, unresolved tension in this.

A simple bench is a welcome sight for so many and the reasons behind each are so uniquely individual that it is unthinkable to attempt to guess.
A welcome seat, where you can ponder away until your hearts content is my preferred choice and for others it may just be to smile at strangers, with the odd hello before going back to their solitary life.
I wrote once about a bench and although I didn't know where it was going, it became a bench too big for one, as they missed happier times sitting there together and it became his memory of his wife.
A simple wooden bench becomes so much more to so many and none moreso than your character, taking a moment to mentally file her thoughts like an unending to do list.
