A SUBTLE SMILE

A SUBTLE SMILE

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

with child

"

I stretch my long arms way up to an azure blue sky

with wispy clouds floating by

a slight chill in the air

yet the sun toasts my skin

I launch into mixed up daydreams

reflecting my erratic past

I try not to think of all my mistakes and misgivings

contrary, focus on notions of my future

this time with a subtle smile on my face

At once I sense motion and extend my hands

down to my belly

I massage it gently in hopes that my baby

takes notice  that these are my hands, your mother

I find my self repeating that word, mother

with a certain gratitude

I take note of my heavy breasts

n*****s enlarged

a bit of a chubby face

all in preparation of the exhilarating event

just now I am four months with child

flutters inside evoke the reality of what is to come

Still, I sit on this bench in wonderment

regarding the two of us

it shall be lovely if this baby has a father

who knows him

yet this is not possible  straightaway

perhaps in the future if we are lucky

My soldier shall appreciate us  and we shall transform into a family of three

I love this beautiful portrait. It takes me back in time. When I spoke to a new soul growing within and the two of us dreamed together.
Your poem is filled with love and hope. Just as it should be.

that would make my heart sing! Merry Christmas🎄🎄🎄🎄🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊

I read a quote recently; never think that the word "impossible" exists for a mother and never judge her by what she does to survive.

The ending was definitely unexpected, I felt the flow of the story in every part and every line. And the uncertainty and pain of the ending... oh this is a real poem. I loved it.
The descriptions and flow, it is clear that the story definitely leaves a wound in the heart of a person, yet still leaves hope. As a woman, I felt it very deeply. It is definitely a very successful work. LOVED IT

Four months pregnant and concerns about whether the child will ever know the father. What a desperately sad situation. Conjures up all sorts of different scenarios dear Betty. Can’t go back. Only forward. A lovely piece of creative writing. Sending you warm wishes for Christmas.

thank you, Pete, a lovely, supportive review!🌷
Those erratic pasts do love to spoil a good daydream, don't they? Yet I think it's the present snd future that lead into your thoughts with the father in such a precarious predicament.
Now don't go trying to say precarious predicament ten times fast before your morning coffee, will you?
